Minimum wage in DC is currently $14/hr, and July 1 will go up to $15 an hour--so you definitely have to pay at least that amount.

But maybe think about what other types of jobs people can get paying minimum wage, and why those other jobs might be more attractive to a college student.

For example, a job with multiple employees (ice cream shop, fast food, etc.) will probably have other people there age working--so a better chance to make friends and at least have a little fun while working.

Some minimum wage jobs offer employee discounts, so even if pay isn't great, they might save money on the things they want/need.

Many minimum wage jobs offer flexible hours/days--so if they like to sleep in and not start a shift before 11 am, there's more opportunity for that working at other minimum wage jobs.

So if you're only paying minimum (or close to it) what would make your nanny position more attractive to some people?

Considering minimum wage is 7.75/hr in VA, 10.10 in Maryland and unemployment is skyrocketing I think employers will have no issues finding a qualified college student at 15/hr, or less if they are not in DC proper. I also doubt there are many college students who would currently prefer a public facing fast-food job to a nanny gig for a single family in the current environment.

I’m paying a school extended-care teacher $20 an hour, and we will shift schedules when we return to work so that we don’t have to cover a full 8 hours. But when I was looking on urbansitter, I saw a couple of people who said they would charge lower rates if a family hired them for a significant number of hours. So you may be able to find someone who’ll do the same.

How about hire the person who seems nicest and whom your kids will like best? This isn't charity. If you had said, hire a laid off daycare employee, that would have been different.

My college student found her job through care.com. She posted that she was available and they contacted her. I would also ask through a chirch.

Your neighborhood Nextdoor or Facebook page.

There is nothing unethical about needing childcare, btw. When you place the ad ask for those interested to PM you.

Do you have a subscription-only list serve for your community? That’s where I’ve seen postings. That will more likely help you find someone who doesn’t have a long commute, with the bonus of some possible references from your own neighborhood.

Just curious, where to look? Is there a list serve? Contact the schools? Do you have to know someone?
