Team Durant Grassroots Boys tryouts just announced on March 10 and 12, 7-9 PM at St James in Springfield. I would definitely send your DS to the highly-selective Team Durant tryouts, at least for a good workout and learning experience. Fairfax Stars and NoVA 94 Feet already finished tryouts and selected teams. My DS earned a spot on a NoVA 94 Orange team (hooray)! Go to the other basketball threads to look for AAU teams in your area and check their twitter feeds. Some teams host tryouts in late spring or Fall.
Sure, but keep in mind the highly selective part. My kid went to tryouts for a similarly competitive team in the spring of his 7th grade year and felt like he was the only kid there who couldn't dunk (of course he wasn't, but some kids could, which kinda shocked me for 7th graders). If your kid makes a Team Durant team, awesome. If not, be aware that there are many levels of basketball below that level and kids can find a team at their level. Also, there may be some shuffling of teams as kids who made teams don't commit, so it might be worth reaching out to coaches.
Yes, so much this. Middle school basketball has such a wide variety of skill levels and so much of it is based on where a kid is in his growth progression. Also at the highest levels you will see reclassed 8th graders.
