What could it possibly take for things to swing at least a tiny bit in the direction of law enforcement?
We could reverse the Republican Supreme Court’s decision that rolled back the District’s gun laws. That would help law enforcement. But the five Republicans on the Supreme Court are too tied to gun identity politics to get votes for GOP donors to think about changing Heller.
That’s part of the problem, but the whole country is governed by the current gun laws. The whole country doesn’t have these problems. But, much of the country actually enforced the laws it has. It doesn’t have the Youth Act and other catch and release programs for even serious crimes and for those well beyond the typical definition of youth. It doesn’t disband police units that are actually having a positive impact as part of a social justice experiment. It doesn’t focus on restorative justice and “violence interruptors “ instead of actual police work and punishment. It is easy to simply blame everything on the Republicans, but that is a complete cop out because programs on the left also significantly contribute to this problem.
