Dealer offering $32,800 as initial out-the-door price. I have no idea how much is too much to negotiate down. New car.
It really depends on the car, the model year and other factors. Not all models are really that negotiable. What you need to do is call other dealers and ask their out-the-door price and play them off each other. Also make sure the out-the-door price is for the TRIM you want. I once had a dealer quote me an out-the-door price for a car but it was the wrong trim.
This. When I worked on the car lot it really mattered on what our particular inventory looked like. I worked Toyota and there were some models (Camry, highlander, corolla, Prius) that we really never negotiated on beyond a certain point. We just didn't need to. Other models were rare and we didn't have many but maybe they were niche cars and we also didn't negotiate much on (4 runner, solaria) even though you may be looking at something thats been on our lot awhile. The models you could really get a deal on were a.) basic stripped models (everyone wants the mid upgrade or the highest upgrade, no one wants base) 2.) models that the body was due to significantly change the next year bc you're car will look "old fast" and people want to wait just one more year to get the latest. 3.) models that don't sell well but don't fit a niche market...when I was there it was Yaris (for a few bucks more just get a corolla...a much nicer car) and tacoma (for a few bucks more get a tundra...a much nicer truck. So my point is we need to know make and model to really help.
