At a NCSL game, the ref praised and gave words of encouragement to some of the girls, such as “great move”, “nice kick”, and “good pass” when he saw players making good plays. It was very nice to see a ref being so kind to players on either team. Worse moment: it was raining and the ref was wearing long sleeves and pants, but wanted to cancel the game because he said he’s too cold. The kids on both teams protested saying that they are wet and cold too while they were only wearing shorts and short sleeve jerseys. He kept on complaining during the match but at least the allowed the game to continue.
No. I hate this. Most refs don't really have any idea what they're doing, let alone coaching qualifications, let alone an understanding about what each coach is actually trying to get their team to work on during the game. "Nice move" might have been when the coach wanted the player to pass. "Nice pass" might have been a terrible decision. "Nice kick?" SMDH.
I agree. I'm a ref and I did this this weekend (I gave a player a compliment out of habit I guess) and I immediately regretted it.
