Mainly asking if freshman/sophomores typically earn varsity spots (based on merit of course) or whether one is supposed to expect some sort of "pay your dues" mentality such that you may be good enough as a freshman/sophomore but junior/senior players who may be just slightly less capable still get the nod?
Varsity is usually reserved for Juniors and Seniors because if they don't make the team they are getting cut and wont be placed on JV. JV is for Freshman and sophomores and if they play good or there are injuries might get called up to Varsity as the season goes on.
Uh, no. Best players go on Varsity. The remaining freshman, sophomores, and willing juniors go on JV (assuming there are enough spaces). Non-willing Juniors and Seniors who dont make varsity get cut. The goal is to put the most competitive team on the field you can. Big advantage to girls who play club at a higher level (ECNL, CCL, etc.) ---- not a knock against other leagues, good players there as well, but not AS many.
