How about Churchill HS? Do they accept only ECNL/CCL players for varsity?

It also depends on the school. For example Oakton takes a good 30 players for varsity. Many of those “varsity players” won’t see the field.

Varsity is usually reserved for Juniors and Seniors because if they don't make the team they are getting cut and wont be placed on JV.

JV is for Freshman and sophomores and if they play good or there are injuries might get called up to Varsity as the season goes on.

Uh, no.
Best players go on Varsity.
The remaining freshman, sophomores, and willing juniors go on JV (assuming there are enough spaces).

Non-willing Juniors and Seniors who dont make varsity get cut.

The goal is to put the most competitive team on the field you can.
Big advantage to girls who play club at a higher level (ECNL, CCL, etc.) ---- not a knock against other leagues, good players there as well, but not AS many.

That depends on the high school. Our high school does not have its best players on varsity - and if you’ve made the team as a junior you will 100% make it as senior, no matter if you deserve it or not. It is why playing high school means very little at some schools.

You must be from out of town.
I can't see that happening in the DMV.
If it did, the high school AD would be gone before the coach (who would be following a close second).

Returning varsity players almost always make the team again. So if there were 10 seniors last year, there will be about 10 spots open that go to the best players from JV or Freshmen. Also positions needed can impact who makes it.

Agree. My sibling and I played Varsity as Freshmen. It was not common, but they did take the most talented. 2 other players from my Club team also made it, but we were all on the top team-National champs.

That said, my HS was nowhere near as large as many in this area. Not even close. It might not have happened at a very large school with such a large player pool.

OP here. Not looking to give advice to my DD, just want to make sure I can appropriately comment on her feedback/understand the lay of the land.

I think it is likely very specific to schools and coaches, but generally what I have seen is that upper classmen will get more playing time than freshmen for players of roughly equal ability. This is especially true for seniors. It depends on the competitiveness of your team too, there are some teams where the better players play period. Your mileage may vary.

Best players make the squad...regardless of grade. Some may have relationships with the coach from club ball.
