Full disclosure: I am a Jamestown parent. Jamestown SHOULD be on the short list, and I’m going to be disappointed (but not surprised) if it’s not at least listed as an option (for an option-ha!). And actually I will go farther; I am in favor of Jamestown becoming option, as long as walkers are allowed to attend if they want. I feel that way about ANY neighborhood school that is going to be turned option, actually. Many people factor in a neighborhood school within walking distance when looking for a house-i know we did (although we ended up in bussing territory). I really think it would be crappy if the SB to pull a thing like this to the people who live literally across the street/down the road from a school. Jamestown is the best choice for a variety of reasons-but I don’t think the SB will piss off this tax base. Worms.
Regardless of what people think should or should not happen, there will be no neighborhood preference. Not for anyone at in any program at any site. As to whether they should or not, I think if they did what you suggested, what would happen is that the really affluent families who wanted a particular choice school would buy their way in via houses in the designated walk zone, resulting in lower-income families being pushed out even more.
