I suspect that most teachers do not give formal notice until they need to do so.  
It's been a long time, and I don't remember all the specifics, but I don't recall any requirement to commit to the following year.  I think it was assumed you were returning unless you resigned--and, you could resign at any time.
I did have tenure and the rules may have been different prior to that. I think before that, teachers without tenure received kind of a vague letter about employment the following year.[/quote]
