No matter what the central office tells you, the principals get to do the hiring.

As others have said, get your applications completed at the school systems in which you are interested AND write directly to the principals. In many cases the principals know of openings but cannot do anything until the internal process has been completed. I have seen candidates in for interviews already at my school so you want to get on the radar. Make sure your certifications are in order and your references are lined up. However, don't get your hopes up. In many cases, you won't see the big push until 1 July. Some slots will get filled earlier, certainly, but I know from past years that our school will still be interviewing internal candidates up through the end of the school year (mid/end of June). Unless you get something lined up earlier, you need to be in town the first 2 weeks of July and ready to interview. Good luck!

Thanks all. I'm keeping an eye on the vacancy list, but very few vacancies in my area have been posted so far. I probably just need to count on having to sit tight until more schools know about numbers and open positions for next year.

I've never taught in FCPS--but, I suspect it is like most school systems. The jobs come open when the notice is given. I told my principal that I was leaving in April --she asked me to wait to give her my formal notice so that she could honestly interview possible candidates BEFORE my slot went on the system list. It gave her some flexibility. If I had turned in my resignation earlier, she would have had to take what the system sent her (teachers returning from leave, etc. ) I cannot remember when I formally gave notice--but, it was before the end of the school year. It was in plenty of time.

I suspect that most teachers do not give formal notice until they need to do so.
It's been a long time, and I don't remember all the specifics, but I don't recall any requirement to commit to the following year. I think it was assumed you were returning unless you resigned--and, you could resign at any time.
I did have tenure and the rules may have been different prior to that. I think before that, teachers without tenure received kind of a vague letter about employment the following year.

If you see a position you want, contact the principal directly.

A job fair for both internal and external candidates will be held on April 28th. I think it's at Kilmer Middle School. If FCPS teachers want to transfer, they can go, and if outside candidates want a job, they can go.

I think the date is sometime in April. Principals go to staffing this week, so you should see some vacancies pop up in the next week or so.

OP here-- In my current district we have an actual contract for the following year given to us that we must sign by a certain date. Guess FCPS doesn't do that. So there's no particular date by which most vacancies will be posted?

I'm not sure what you mean by "contracts due". At some point the do survey us about our plans for next school year but I don't know when the deadline is.

I'm in the application process and wondering whether to expect a wave of new vacancies after a certain date. Thanks!!
