At some point (2015?) DCPS or another agency issued a report about future school enrollment growth based on population growth estimates from the Office of Planning. They essentially said that they wanted to hold on to Shaw MS because they expected enough growth in the number of students in the future that they would need another middle school in that part of the city. Can't find the report right now, but it's gotta be available online.
Thank you for this! I'm the OP, and I was hoping that someone in the DCUM world might have a contact at DCPS who could shed some light. Maybe time to call myself..
It is the location for the "Center City Middle School" that was proposed at some future date, as part of the boundary revision process in 2014. https://wamu.org/story/14/06/17/stuck_in_the_middle_dc_plan_could_see_new_middle_schools/ Considering that enrollment has been in decline for Cardozo's middle school program, and that Brookland Middle is seeing weak enrollment, there is no foreseeable way that there will be enough demand for a new middle school at Shaw in the next 10 years. Which was obvious 5 years ago.
