Even entry level jobs paid money (none of these "you pay tuition for the privilege to work for free internships") and we had health insurance, with no contributions! He attended a private college & did have student loans from his first year, but he could actually afford the payments AND an ok apartment (safe & clean) We paid all of our own bills at 18 (incl buying junk heap cars, tuition, ins. etc) .
