Is this a bad idea? I'm thinking about asking for a month extension. The company changed from offering me a contract job ( 1 year) to a permanent position. This most likely means they need the position filled urgently. I'm not sure what to do. Could they take the job offer back if I ask for a later start date?
My rule (for me) was not to leave grad school for a job until I had a draft of my dissertation complete. I found a job, and that gave me a writing deadline. My field is Physics. Note, though, I probably had 3 more months of work to get it 100% out the door. Working full time, it took me two years and a lot of sleepless nights. On the other hand, I had hit the wall on university funding, so if I wanted to eat, I needed a job
What year did you start working FT in industry? I am almost on my fifth year and I have been a FT student all this time. Originally the plan was to finish in December.
I spent 7 years in residence: 2 for a (required) masters, and 5 for the PhD. Now, I did get sick for a while which resulted in no progress for a year. I started working after 7 years in residence (started grad school 1987; MA 1990; PhD 1996; job in 1994). If you leave without a draft of your dissertation, you will probably never finish. That is what I saw with colleagues. Research done, and documented you can finish.
