Why don't they call math 7 hon -- "math 8"? Well, I guess it has to do with the plan to have only 7th graders in the math 7 hon course (which is actually math 8). So, they are not mixing kids who are actually 7th graders in with the kids who are actually 8th graders -- even if their math course and math SOL are the same. Perhaps that is to protect the 8th graders from feeling like they are slow b/c they are with 7th graders??? I don't know. Now, for algebra, they do mix the grades -- since most of the algebra kids in MS are 8th graders, they let the accellerated 7th graders take the class with mainly 8th graders. Not sure how it is handled at the secondary schools where potentially, there could be 10th or 11th or 12th graders trying to get the algebra credit needed to graduate... are they mixed in with the 8th graders taking reg. algebra? I'm not sure. (Note, the 7th graders wouldn't be in the mix with the upper class kids b/c they would certainly be taking Alg HON... which the upper class kids just trying to graduate would not be taking. They would only be trying to pass reg. Alg.). Anyway -- I'm not sure how they mix those kids. But, in your average MS, 7 Math Hon is going to be only 7th graders and 8th Math is going to be only 8th graders.
