Bethesda Elementary. We were never asked to buy one. DS had one from school in 3rd grade, and like many children, his fingers were too small to cover the holes easily. For the concert I ended up taping some of them! We are a musician family. I hate recorders. There is nothing worse to put kids off an instrument.
Do you mean "musical"? If so, you'd never say you "hate" an instrument. You're a philistine.
No charge for recorders at Kemp Mill ES. They got them after winter break in 3rd grade. No issues with finger size, and they had a concert playing with all holes covered and at least 20 kids did fine. A recorder is fine as a first instrument - cheap, easy to carry, no moving parts, difficult to break, easy to tune, and very little you can do wrong.
