How much teacher turnover is normal in MCPS middle schools (Silver Creek)

Mid year teachers leaving is usually personal. When there’s a big exodus at the end of the year, those are teachers who want out of that particular school. But there’s been a ton of turnover at my W middle school over the years and no one seems to be tracking that. I think the school will see another big turnover this spring. It’s an admin issue for certain in my school’s case.

I'm aware of a couple of staffing issues at SCMS this year that certainly nothing to do with the administration. One teacher had a visa issue (since resolved.) Another had a serious health issue and had to take leave.

It's frustrating for all involved, but the fact that they're happening at the same school at the same time is just bad luck.

As a former employee of the county who also left mid-year, it's systemic. If you look at careers, you'll see a hell of a lot of LT vacancies. While it has a report addressing turnover, their way of dealing is superficial at best.

I'm a teacher at a different MCPS middle school. I know a teacher who is miserable at SCMS. I do think something is up there.

Was it science last year? If so, regular teacher had serious medical concerns; then long term number 1; teacher returned briefly only to need further medical leave; so long term number 2; and then regular teacher returned toward end of year. Far from ideal for all concerned.

A couple years ago the kids were having alot of rape incidents and even a Twitter page called mcpstwittwr fights.b they were beating the crap put of each other and it was a mad house. The solution mcps schools and mcea fired all the new teachers like they were the cause. Before they were fired the admins made sure they got their way in that they made those teacher be liberal with the grade inflation policies.

First teacher couldn’t handle the class, it was out of control, next teacher went off on the class and threatened them son in came a third teacher managed to get through the rest of the year. The next year, same thing happened in Spanish. Had two teachers that year. But it was bad luck, the first teacher left for health reasons so it was a long term sub.

Right in the middle of the pandemic we lost our grade’s vice principal who was awesome and then shortly after our Principal who was also great. I know nothing about the new admin. Never met them and they have no presence. The unexpected departure of our excellent VP and Principal in the middle of the pandemic made the school feel soulless and rudderless. There is an interim Principal in place.

Revolving door of teachers in other departments too. But the counselors are amazing and have been the bright spot of the school. They love and care about the kids.

Silver Creek has had this issue for a while. There are prior threads. Look them up.
