OP here. Dad isn't into sports at all. Maybe there's a lecture series I could find for him. Sister has already done her thing (got them a joint gift of towels, at their request!). I am thinking of a charging station or a portable air pump (his tires often show up low in the cold).
Thanks for all of the suggestions so far. Keep 'em coming. I haven't bought anything yet! |
Where do they live? There might be location specific events or attractions that you could get them tickets for. |
Similar Dad situation ... so far photo mug, calendar of the family, and a gift card to electronics store. |
My Dad is a history buff, so I got him a DVD about Issac Newton (he used to love teaching me about gravity) and an audio book about the Mayflower (he traced our ancestry back to it).
Oh, and a can of lima beans (his favorite side dish). OP, if your dad likes to read a lot, the subscription idea is nice. |
My Dad is big into frugality, conservation, and using less than you need (this is both an environmental thing and an efficiency thing; he's an engineer by training). He definitely does not want "stuff." So I got him consumable/usable products. He's been trying various environmentally friendly products but hasn't found any he loves yet, so I bought him my favorite eco-friendly handsoaps, multi-purpose cleaner, bath cleaner, and dish liquid. I also got him eco-friendly nuts, coffee, and some good wine and cheese. Not very exciting, but we will not have to take it back to the store! (He has been known to open presents, make a face, and then ask us to take them back because he just doesn't "need" them!!!) |
My husband and his father regularly buy and share lecture series from Great Courses. You should check that out. |
I second the Great Courses. I designed a catalog for them once and was drooling all over the intriguing lectures (audio or video) on literature, archealogy, history, religious studies, philosophy, astronomy, etc...tons of scholarly brain candy. |
One year, I got my parents a subscription to greendimes.com which reduces or eliminates junk mail. Also, if he has everything, why not a charitable gift? At donorschoose.org you can pick any amount to give and you can choose the project to give to at a particular school. I have chosen schools in my dad's hometown and given to projects in his name. The children and the teacher send thank you notes and you get something to print out to give to your gift recipient. Another suggestion, fleece lined crocs. I know, but I swear he will love them. |
My dad is also fairly impossible to shop for, but I've had good luck the last two years sending him gourmet goodies from Dean and Deluca. Last year it was a box of snacks, this year it was a colander full of Italian goodies. |
A Kindle? He could get his newspapers electronically delivered |
I got my Dad an expensive basket of cheese, crackers, sausage, spreads and nuts. I've given him that several times, and on the years I gave him electronics or clothes, he asks, "no basket?" So basket of food it is. |
I often buy my dad books if I see something I know he'll want to read. Not very exciting, but useful. I also buy him nice photos or prints when I see one I know he'll like. This year he's getting one with the Vietnam Wall (which is very close to his heart) and one of a cow at sunset. (he grew up on a cattle ranch and it's an excellent cow.) I frame them and he can put them up in his office, his house or his retirement/vacation home. In the past I've gotten him things to aid him in his weight loss quest (pedometers, good diet/nutrition books) and the occasional gag gift I thought he'd get a kick out of. One year I got him an indulgences basket: a good bottle of red wine, a couple of good cigars, some high-end chocolate. One year I got him and my stepmom a joint gift of a "romance" basket with wine, candles, chocolates and a romantic jazz CD I'd mixed myself. One year I gave him a "wardrobe of classical music" because he was trying to learn about classical - I got him 10 CD's that were classics and then taped all the CD's so he could also listen to them in the car. And occasionally I've gotten him cool gadgets from the hardware store or brookstone type places.
I luv Christmas. ![]() |
