What is the closest you've ever come to being killed?

3. recently had swine flu - ok, sorry, bad joke, but i really did have swine flu

This happened to me as well. Class 4-5 rapids in Costa Rica. We were all thrown from the raft, and I got caught underneath it. So freakin scary. I panicked, and luckily calmed down enough to reach the edge. It could have turned out a lot differently.

Glad you are okay OP

Who takes a kid from a grocery store parking lot? If they'd had good intentions they would have taken me inside....

To this day I shudder to remember it (and I remember it clearly)

What did your dad say to those people when he saw they were going to take you away in their car? Did he call the cops?

It's one of those things we don't discuss.... dad gets angry and defensive whenever we bring up anything negative from the past. Similarly, my mom doesn't acknowledge the time I told her I was (mildly) molested by a neighbor when I was little....

If I recall correctly, dad thanked the people for finding me and that was it. I guess it was a different world back then.

I can still see the back seat, it was in the days when you sometimes had to release the front seat to climb into the back? I was just about to climb in.....

Sometimes I think it's a miracle I escaped childhood relatively unscathed. It's what makes me a crazy, overprotective mother - I know what can happen when no one's watching, even for a moment.....

I did a lot of dumb things like walk home by myself late at night when I was in my 20's. Drove drunk a couple of times in my teens. I was stalked by a boyfriend my senior year of HS but I don't think he would have really killed me. Sigh. It's amazing any of us ever make it out of our 20's.

Maybe not close to dying. Close to being mugged? I was walking down the street in college (West Philly) by myself at 2am after working on a student group activity and I was carrying my laptop in a brief case. Absolutely nobody was out. A random guy was walking towards me and I had a bad feeling but stayed calm. We crossed paths and he asked me if I had any change. I said no, I didn't even have my wallet on me (a lie). Then I ran back to my dorm. Then I thought about it. Who asks for change from a stranger at 2am?

This was my first thought also. It's a miracle I'm still here, and didn't kill someone else.

Umm, this is really really scary. At the very least you would have been abused. It would have been nice if your father called the cops, then maybe we could have learned the whereabouts of many kids.

A 100+ year old oak tree fell and crashed through our house, missing DH, DB and me by about 5-10 ft. I had PTSD for 5 years.

I was caught (not shot, ducking behind cars, gun then pointed at me from the person on the street) in a drive-by shooting freshman year of college. Blew it off then, but only recently worked through night terrors, as well as sleep-walking. 14 years later.

I was followed on the NY subway by a man with a knife. I jumped out at a station as the doors were closing, I turned around on the stairs and he was right behind me. Don't know how he moved so quickly. Had a guardian angel that night for sure.

As a stupid teen in South African my friends and I hitched a ride (to get to a bar) with strangers who clipped another moving car which led to a high speed chase and guys pulling guns on each other in an alley. Not sharing that one with my kids.

I thought I was going to die in a plane crash when I was 15. Flying into Japan, they told us the landing gear was malfunctioning. They had us put our heads down, oxy masks, etc. They took my Dad to help with the emergency door and we thought we'd never see him again. But it turned out to be a false alarm, and we landed without a scratch. phew!

OMG--my nightmare living in a neighborhood with old trees.

What caused it? Storm? Or did it just fall?

Recently I was home alone on a stormy night with DS and a GIANT limb from a tree on neighbor's property crashed into the street, making a thunderous noise and taking down power lines. NOw I;m obsessed that the whole tree is going to fall (is right next to our house).

I was crossing the street on foot once (I had the signal) and a van made an illegal left turn and skimmed my shoulder as it drove past me. If I had been one step ahead, I would have been a goner.

Had an UTI (but no symptoms at all). It progressed into a kidney infection I had a super high fever, the chilis and a really bad headache. went to the ER the dr. thought I had meningitis, had to get a spinal tap and everything.

They where preparing me for the worst telling me things like if it's bacterial it all depends how well the antibiotics work.

They did not find the kidney infection for 2 days because all of my urine tests came back normal so even after the ruled out meningitis they still did not know what I had.
