GW Nursery

Anonymous
There was a thread last September that mentioned GW was reinstating its nursery. Has anyone given birth there since and used the nursery? I'd love to hear your feedback.

Haven't given birth there yet (36 weeks now) but for what it's worth, I asked at the hospital tour a few weeks ago about their nursery. I got a fairly condescending response from the tour guide indicating that there was no more nursery because it's so much better for mom and baby to establish breastfeeding if the baby rooms in. This is not my first baby, but first at GW, and was annoyed at the response.

GW expects you to bring someone with you and have them stay overnight to help care for you and the baby. As in they aren't supposed to act like an employee of the hospital except they aren't.

As a warning you won't get any help or sleep at GW. It's awful.

Lack of nursery is one reason I switched practices.

36 week PP here. I delivered my first at a "baby friendly" hospital as well, so I do have an idea of what to expect. It was challenging to care for my baby in the room by myself after I had an emergency C after a very long induction, as the nurses were generally unhelpful there, and was glad my DH stayed over. I don't know that I'd go so far as to say it was awful, though.

I delivered at GW 3 months ago. There is no nursery.

As for the PP who said you won't get any sleep - I didn't find that to be the case at all. No one bothered me at night. In fact, my baby ended up in the NICU because no one bothered me at night, and there ended up being something wrong with my baby that wasn't caught by my nurse overnight.

The whole thing about GW being a baby-friendly maternity ward is BS. They barely checked my baby at all, and I had to bring the problem to their attention more than once before it became clear to them that it was an issue.

If I wasn't done having children, I would be done with GW for this and other reasons.

I delivered at GW in June- no nursery. I'm surprised at the PP who said she didn't feel like they checked on the baby. That was completely the opposite of my experience.

I didn't get much sleep but that was because of the endless rotation of people coming in to check on me and the baby. You can set up "do not disturb" hours which were helpful to minimize the interruptions (medications and doctors still came, but the cleaning people, volunteers and catering did not).

18:56 here. I am not kidding when I say that no one checked on me or the baby between 7pm shift change and 7am shift change. I went looking for my nurse several times in the night.

I delivered there in April Via emergency c section and no one checked on me after the first night. In fact, I had to call multiple times to get Tylenol. They did check on me the first 12 hours or so.

19:50 here. That's INSANE. I was honestly looking forward to going home so I could get some rest instead to the constant interruptions of nurses (for me and baby, lactation consultants, my OB, pediatrician, hearing test, another nurse for blood draw for babies testing), volunteers (I kid you not, there were volunteers giving our smoothies that came by. An hour later someone came by to make sure the volunteers has offered me a smoothie ) and hospital staff (cleaning/trash removal 1x a day, someone from Dining Services, someone to collect food trays, etc.)

I can't understand how care could differ so much- thats quite scary!

God yes I loved GW and will deliver there again, but I had constant interruptions postpartum.

Would you mind sharing why you would deliver there again? I'm getting nervous that I'd have no support for recovery there following a c-section.

You won't. Your significant other will be expected to take care of you following the birth.
