Afternoon tea is american? |
we can't have the kids showing any sign of body fat now, can we? Even kids have to be rail thin. ![]() |
Snack culture is ANNOYING. My friend with a 2nd grader was annoyed her kids teacher doesn't allow snacks this year. No teacher of my kid has since preschool! My kids have been so conditioned to expect snacks everywhere that they get in the car to go somewhere and ask me for a snack. I tell them I am not a traveling grocery store, I'm not walking around with a carpetbag of snackery. nobody needs to be shoveling food in their mouth every 90 minutes. |
Bull to DL's mother. She can home school kid if she wants her to have a snack in the afternoon. School is for learning not for eating the whole day. |
I think depending on the schedule, a snack is reasonable. School starts at 9:15 and k lunch is at 10:20. School gets out at 3:45. That's a ridiculous lunch schedule, and the school acknowledges it by having afternoon snack time for the k classes. Even 1st, wasting 30 min later doesn't snack. But k does. |
Our school allows morning or afternoon snacking when the lunch period is too early or too late. However instruction is NOT halted. Children are expected to multitask if they're hungry, which can lead to problems for some kids. Ideally this would not happen because lunch would always be at lunchtime!!! Drat these schools. |
Lots of teachers allow kids to bring healthy snacks. They don't stop to eat...they keep working. What's the big deal?
My middle schooler eats breakfast at 7:15 and doesn't have lunch until 1ish. That's a long time between meals for growing middle schoolers. Kindergarteners at schools with late dismissal go a long time between their super early lunch and dismissal. Why not let them have a snack? I went to private school (which is ridiculously better than public) and we were allowed to eat a mid-morning snack. In fact, k-2 received milk service during snack time. We started school earlier in the morning than public schools. |
Ugh, who cares. |
In that scenario I'd be pro-snack. Everyone flags a bit in the afternoon anyway, and being hungry on top of that just seems to stack the deck against them. Will they die of starvation? No. But if a snack revives their energy and gets them across the finish line, why not? OP, is the problem that you find this mom annoying generally? |
No one said the whole day, jackass. Who cares if they have a snack? How does that hurt your little snowflake? |
The big deal is that our children are being taught they can never be hungry and they must constantly be putting something in their mouth. |
My first grade class has lunch at 10:45. We offer them a time to snack during an afternoon read aloud around 1:30. Fortunately we are able to find a time that works. That being said, we get lots of complaints from the parents about the lunch time - but it is the only way to get all the classes in to the cafeteria. The parents really seem to mind much more than the kids. |
My son has lunch at 10:30 and school ends at 2:45. If he has breakfast at 7 he isn't very hungry by 10:30, and has a hard time eating much. Fortunately snacks are allowed in the afternoon.
There are unfortunately kids out there who have lunch crazy early, and I would not blame their parents in the least for pushing the school to allow for at least a quick snack later. |
We didn't get any dam snacks when I was in school in the 60's. I am amazed i lived through that horrible experience for 13 years. |
