I love it here, too, for all the reasons previously mentioned.
But, hey, lay off Canada. We couldn't ask for better neighbors. |
i'm not from DC and i like it here. i don't relate at all to those posts that talk about the bitchiness, competitiveness etc (the only place i've seen it is on this board!). none of the friends i have who are either from here or moved here from elsewhere are anything like that. i think it's the circles you hang with, rather than the city itself.
admittedly, none of my friends are big earners with huge houses, luxury cars, kids in private schools etc. most of them aren't married yet, have no kids, and work in the arts, media, and non-profit sector |
Damn them and their delicious bacon and their universal health care... ![]() |
What makes you think D.C. is perfect? That sounds extremely naive. |
Please indicate which poster said DC is perfect. |
OP - this post is fantastic - thank you for it! I am constantly amazed by all the DC haters on this board, who ALL still live in DC! I just don't get it - if anyone here hates this area so much, LEAVE. What's keeping you here? Those of us who live and work here and love it (and there are a lot of us; somehow, people without any ties here whatsoever keep pouring into the city, including myself, my husband, and many of my friends) will be happy to see the miserable "don't want to fit in here" people go back to Seattle or wherever else they came from. No one will hold it against them. And no one cares. There are plenty of miserable people everywhere (Seattle included, by the way) - but for me, Washington has it all. And thank you to the OP for reminding me why I moved here in the first place! |
14:32 here. Kim L., by chance? Ottawa? |
Isn't DC the murder capital of the country? Not exactly a badge of honor. It's shameful. What's even worse is the disparity between the haves and the have nots. How shameful is it that in our country's capital are the poorest people loitering on the streets without jobs, some homeless, some doing drug deals. And then there's the affluent side of DC, people living inthose 1.3 mil homes with kids at fancy schools.
You can find beautiful parks anywhere. But anyplace that has such great disparity in income and socioeconomic class and is the murder capital of our country isn't a good place to live. No, I don't live in DC. I live in VA. And smiling at strangers isn't going to bridge this socioeconomic gap or make the murder rate come down. |
I think Detroit now holds that title--murder capital of the US. Also, aren't there usually rich and poor people everywhere, just depends on how you define it geographically. |
Uh, people who still don't have indoor plumbing in Caroline County??? Fairfax County being one of the wealthiest counties in the country???? Richmond was once the murder capitol of the country and it still has a high murder rate. Oh you have great disparity in Virginia (plus a friggin' sales tax on food which hurts the poor more than anyone els -- how shameful is that?) -- you've just managed to shove it off into the countryside and the inner city where you don't have to see it. |
Speaking of great popular culture, let's follow the example of Michael Moore's hilarious feature film, Canadian Bacon, and declare war on Canada! |
You have a very simplistic and provincial view of the DC metropolitan area, and DC itself. DC has a lot of problems, but Northern VA isn't at all representative of what the rest of VA is like. I was born and raised in northern VA and even I know not to look down on DC like it's a piece of crap that needs to clean itself up, while VA has it's shit together. Expand your horizons a bit. |
Hilarious!! I will say I'm surprised you prefer DC over Cali. Everyone I know from Cali miss it a lot. I've heard so many great things, I almost want to move there! But like a lot of people born and raised in this area I can't imagine living anywhere else. I don't even fully understand why, but I always think everywhere else is great to visit, but I'll always want to live here. |
The have/have not divide in DC is of grave concern to anyone who cares about social justice issues. It's a disgrace that any children in this country lack adequate education and health care, that anyone sleeps on a sidewalk, that it is unsafe to walk alone at night. This is a serious problem.
And it's also not what any of the "this area sucks" posters is complaining about. I would respect a poster who got on here and said "how can you all be so obsessed with Sidwell when this city is in such bad shape?" But that's not what the "blame DC" mentality is about. --SAHMs here are snobby --If you are not a big lawyer then you don't get to be in the most special clubs --mean DC people don't like it when I slow my SUV to a crawl so I can breastfeed on my way to work --The people on my cul de sac don't like me because people here are unfriendly --Too many women in DC put off childbearing too long, which is why young women here are rude to pregnant women (dog parks are also at fault; I don't know why). Common thread: I don't like DC because I think it's robbing ME ME ME of something that I WANT WANT WANT. |
You nailed it, pp. |
