I'm researching this trip, 1 year in advance. And for what it's worth we looked at Atlantic city and many hotels are booked for July 2017 so I don't find it too absurd to research. I was able to check AC right off the list.

Saratoga is ok, but I much prefer Lake Placid.
Mirror Lake Inn is an excellent 4 star resort. Great restaurants, a superb spa and walking distance to the village.
My other favorite place is the Mirbeau Inn in Skaneateles NY. Skaneateles is a gem of a Finger Lake and the village is cozy and quaint. Mirbeau is outstanding.

You must not travel much. AC is not sold out 1 year in advance. It is too far in advance to book, just like you sometimes can't book flights over a year in advance. I have booked Borgata the week of for holiday weekends. One year a bunch of friends decided to go for New Year's. Trust me. You do not need to cross off AC due to lack of availability.

You can cross it off due to it being a crappy place to go though.

I actually traveled quite a bit, at least 4-5 times a year, prior to my triplets being born. But rarely inside the US. As for AC being crappy, we heard that too so we weren't too upset.
