Atlanta - Relocating. Need advice

Anonymous
It looks like we are relocating to Atlanta. I do not know where to begin in terms of what is a great suburb to live in. What's this city like to live in? Where would you live? Help. Thoughts?

I have family in Decatur and they love it. There are lots and lots of young families there. You can get a great house for a decent price, especially compared to DC.

I know there are a number of great suburbs, but that's the one I'm familiar with.

That's my recommendation too -- have friends who are a young, professional, diverse couple with kids who live in Decatur and love it.

I lived there and can tell you about more when I have time to post from a computer. It's very different, there are lots of clusters. Question where in Atlanta will the work commute need to be? Do you know? That would help with a great starting point for recommendations.

I lived in Atlanta downtown/buckhead/Duluth/Roswell/Tucker and traveled for work in different counties.

Pp above. Haha! Decatur where it's greater, as they say. There are many nice pockets all around Atlanta.

Also OP what type of neighborhood are you looking for?

Yes but be prepared to privately educate if you have children.

Problem with Decatur is that it's pretty far away from other parts of Atlanta. I wouldn't want to commute to sandy springs or midtown from Decatur.

I'm the PP with the friend in Oak Grove. If I'm not mistaken, they are ITP. If not, they are very close to the perimeter. Their school pyramid is good.

I just checked and their zip is 30345. They are very happy with their neighborhood, their schools, and the DH's commute.

I've never even heard of this neighborhood. That's great the schools are good but that's unusual. There a few decent elementary schools in buckhead but then horrible middle and high schools. Heard of busing?

Just looked. This is a pretty far out location for itp. You'll spend a lot of time on 285 which is awful. It would probably be better to live outside of the perimeter, better schools and an easier commute. Also safer. Oh and this part of dekalb county is ugly. Dekalb county is pretty ghetto.
