Recent Abracadabra or Del Ray Creative Play School feedback

Anonymous
We currently do daycare in DC, but are possibly looking at a change. It's not dire, so we have some time, but want something closer in our neighborhood and are looking for more information.

I am looking for recent feedback on Abracadabra on Commonwealth or the Creative Play School Del Ray location from parents whose children attend either. We mostly want to know about the teachers as we have found this to be the variable at centers that makes the biggest difference. If we stayed at our DC center, the ratios would be low due to kids leaving for DCPS, so we're also curious about dynamics with larger rooms of kids at either of these schools.

Also, any sense of the waitlist situation these days? It would most likely be a for a three year old room or there is a chance we'd wait until four.

Last thing: if you happen to have kid go into the CPS aftercare program, I'd love to hear about that too since we'll need aftercare in the future and like the idea of possibly staying in one place for a while.

You may want to try the old town mom's listserve for feedback on these schools. We're currently making the switch to Abracabra. I liked what I saw on the tour a lot more than I thought I would based on the mixed reviews I've seen here. Also, I'd been scared off by what I'd heard was a super long waitlist. When I called, they had a spot open the same day. Granted, I think we took the last currently open spot.

FWIW, my best friend's little boy went to Abra and they loved it. They live in Del Ray and lots of the neighborhood kids went there. She was always trying to get me to move my DD there but that wasn't going to work out since we live in a different part of Alexandria.

That's because daycare waitlists are a scam. There were probably loads of people who paid good money to be on the list, but you were convenient because you called at the right time. Someone should sue to stop the injustice.

In this case, I'm not so sure about that. I called a few days before the new school year was to start. It likely that the 2s class is full of kids who were on the waitlist since they start at age 2. At this time of the year, if there was an opening in the 2s room, it's likely that some people from the waitlist chose alternatives or moved.

OP,

You'll get much better and more extensive feedback on the following Yahoo neighborhood listservs: Del Ray Parents, Del Ray Moms, RosemontVA and Rosemont Moms.
