Last night Israeli bombed another UN school killing at least 20 people, many of them children. Here is how the UNRWA Spokesperson described it:
https://twitter.com/ChrisGunness/status/494440160780496897 "Last night, children were killed as they slept next to their parents on the floor of a classroom in a UN designated shelter in #Gaza" Israel has bombed at least 7 schools. Most, if not all, were occupied at the time by people taking refuge from homes they had been ordered to abandon. Like the school bombed last night, the schools were designated UN shelters. Their locations and use as shelters had been conveyed to the Israelis. Over the same period, three 3 UN schools were found to have had rockets stored in them. I have not heard Israel make an allegation that any of the schools that were bombed contained rockets. But, it is obvious that if the UN finds weapons, it publicizes the fact and removes them. I am interested in the moral implications of the Israeli actions. Let's take the worst case scenario in which rockets have been hidden in a school full of refugees. Given that Palestinian rockets have killed only 3 Israelis, the threat of a handful of rockets is fairly low. Is it really necessary to kill 20 people, many of whom are children? If Israel knows about the rockets, would it be worth asking the UN to remove them rather than committing wholesale slaughter? It appears that Israel goes immediately to the most lethal reaction possible rather than attempting other options. The fact that Israel orders Palestinians to abandoned their homes and then bombs the designated shelters is unconscionable. That such a high number of children end up as victims is indefensible (which won't stop Israel's apologists from defending it). A country that willingly bombs schools sheltering sleeping children has truly lost its way. |
The irony is they wonder why people don't leave after getting a warning that the area will be bombed. I have seen many videos of civilians who left their houses for shelters just to have the shelters bombed. Â There is nowhere safe in Gaza, not schools, not houses, not cafes, not hospitals, not mosques. There is absolutely NO safety! Israel targets everyone and everything in its sight . By repeatedly bombing UN sites, Israel is giving a big F.U to the World , basically saying "we do not care". |
This is abhorrent on the highest level. Israel can no longer compare itself to western democracies. |
And let's not forget that this has all been occurring in the midst of a Muslim holiday. It's like being bombed on Christmas. |
It has one friend in the world, the US, and that won't last much longer once the Clinton-era politicians in bed with the Israelis die out. Obama is completely ineffectual on Israel because he has to keep proving to the country he's not a black Muslim. |
Well, I will tell you one thing, Obama invited Muslims for Iftar( Ramadan meal after breaking your fast) at the White House during Ramadan and invited the Israeli ambassador to attend the dinner lol. Do you think he would have invited a Hamas representative at a Jewish celebration at the white house? Not only that, but this year's dinner was a "political instrumentalisation of (voluntarily) trapped Muslim leaders listening to President Obama justify the massacre of hundreds of Palestinians, declaring Israel has the right to defend itself. One wonders what is the relationship between the Iftar celebration and Israel? What is the U.S. administration’s implicit-explicit intention in putting the Muslim leaders in such an embarrassing situation? To test their loyalty or rather their capacity to compromise or betray? They obviously remained silent. The cherry on the cake was that Dermer the Israeli ambassador, was invited to celebrate Iftar with the Muslims and was the first to speak at the event, meanwhile his Government is destroying Gaza. And he tweeted how happy he was that Obama reiterated Israels right to defend itself at the Iftar dinner which outraged the Muslim community of course. But then, we wonder "why do they hate us?" So yea, Muslim Americans are not very happy about Obama and these things do not create a positive dialogue at all. People I spoke to who were at the Iftar said they felt humiliated and powerless and most of them regretted going. |
The UN OCHA Spokesperson just tweeted out, "There is literally no safe place for civilians in Gaza.". This was retweeted by the UNRWA USA Twitter feed, adding that it could not be overstated.
There is literally no safe place for civilians in Gaza. Think about that. |
Hamas won't agree to a cease fire so what should israel do? 5 soldiers were killed yesterday when Hamas fighters got them via a tunnel.
The tunnels have to be destroyed. |
UNRWA Statement on the latest bombing:
http://www.unrwa.org//newsroom/official-statements/unrwa-strongly-condemns-israeli-shelling-its-school-gaza-serious "Last night, children were killed as they slept next to their parents on the floor of a classroom in a UN designated shelter in Gaza. Children killed in their sleep; this is an affront to all of us, a source of universal shame. Today the world stands disgraced. "We have visited the site and gathered evidence. We have analysed fragments, examined craters and other damage. Our initial assessment is that it was Israeli artillery that hit our school, in which 3,300 people had sought refuge. We believe there were at least three impacts. It is too early to give a confirmed official death toll. But we know that there were multiple civilian deaths and injuries including of women and children and the UNRWA guard who was trying to protect the site. These are people who were instructed to leave their homes by the Israeli army. "The precise location of the Jabalia Elementary Girls School and the fact that it was housing thousands of internally displaced people was communicated to the Israeli army seventeen times, to ensure its protection; the last being at ten to nine last night, just hours before the fatal shelling. "I condemn in the strongest possible terms this serious violation of international law by Israeli forces." ... "We have moved beyond the realm of humanitarian action alone. We are in the realm of accountability. I call on the international community to take deliberate international political action to put an immediate end to the continuing carnage." |
An Italian reporter that was embedded in Gaza determined that Hamas was responsible for the school bombing the other day, but of course Hamas claims it was Israel targeting kids (also a popular opinion on these threads). He documents everything at the below link.
It's well known that there is limited free press in Gaza, other reporters have been harassed or kicked out for not toeing Hamas's line. This is indicative of how Hamas operates. http://virtualjerusalem.com/news.php?Itemid=13693 |
You have to believe one side or the other is lying. I think there's a lot of evidence that the Palestinians are using places like schools, hospitals and shelters to store weapons, forcing Israel to go after them there. They also encouraged their own people to "stand their ground" by not leaving their houses when Israel said they were going to bomb certain areas. I am not there so I can only go by what I see on the news, but it sure seems like the Palestinians are creating these situations and bringing on their own population what they are getting. |
^^this just sounds crazy. You are not addressing the bombing of un shelters full of children.
I don't want to be Israel's friend anymore or give them 3B anymore. |
Probably not worth Israel asking the UN to remove the rockets, assuming arguendo the rockets are there. A quick review of history establishes that objectively, Israel has little reason to trust the UN. Israel will soon truly be alone in the world when the U.S. decides it has had enough. |
Why are we in bed with these murderous killers. The US should send the Marines in to protect Gaza. |
Isreal needs to be disarmed. It has proven it is not worthy of being a state. Maybe after many years of occupation by the UN, Israel will be allowed a police force. |
