my husband and 10-month-old DD are thinking of moving there, but a few people have told us that there's a lot of crime and gangs there. True? thoughts on living in Centreville?

It is patchy and looks OK with a dull sort of track developemnts and strip malls. Gangs are buried in neighborhoods that might not look like slums. Children have been molested in the library I believe. The library is a hangout for day laborers. You buy there for the house which is usually new or newer. Highway lifestyle without any community identity.

If you want to go far out then look in Clifton. Cville is not a town just areas on a map.

What kind of non-car mobility does it have? How will you feel if gas is closer to $10/gallon in the future?

Here comes the burb bashing, they can't resist.

I live far out, though not Centerville, but another NoVA area. I grew up in NoVA. I would hardly say that C'ville is filled w/gangbangers!!! Maybe some gang activity, but that can be found everywhere.

A major consideration is traffic. There are many jobs to be found close to C'ville in Fairfax, Herndon, Reston, Dulles area, and Chantilly. Personally, I have never had to leave these areas to find a good paying job. People who live in the city all have this impression that we live in bedroom communities and commute for hours each day, which is not true. If you had to commute any farther east than Tysons it would be a complete and total nightmare and Tyson's is pushing the limits of sanity.

Are you going to SAH or work? I have a few friends who live in C'ville in neighborhoods over flowing with young children and moms who stay at home. They have the typical, let the kids play in the cul-de-sac all day. Yes, there are strip malls, but for many of us our lives have more meaning than having a nearby "Peruvian Connection" in which to shop at.

Yes, gas can spike (though I'm not too worried, as I drive a Prius). My husband drives a sedan and with a 5min commute, he only fills up twice a month, so even when prices were high, it hardly made a dent in our pocket book.

No doubt living in the city is nice, the walk ability is worth its weight in gold it's all about what you chose. I read the nanny boards, the school boards, and am absolutely blown away by how much people pay for services closer in. So, they might not commute, but it all evens out in the end. We have a small mortgage (b/c of the COL out here) that will be paid off before our youngest enters into kindergarten. That would never have been possible if we lived in the city or even close to the city. Something really good would have to come up to convince me to trade owning a home free and clear. I choose strip malls and financial freedom over historic architecture and dining at Equinox.

I think it all comes down work commute. I would not live this far out if it were not for the large and ever growing job market. For us and many people we know in our community, we have no need to drive more than 10 miles east.

What a joke. Giving someone advice to look in Clifton. Does everyone have 7 figures to drop on a house? That's like advising someone who's looking in Brooklyn to try Manhattan instead.

I live in Centreville at the corner of Stone Rd. and Braddock Rd. and have never seen a gangbanger in the 5 years I've lived there. Crime is the same as everywhere else. I work downtown so I commute every day and have a bus stop across the street and a park and ride which go directly to Vienna metro.
I'm not saying there aren't any specific areas which don't have problems, but which city doesn't.

I live very close to Centreville - our local HS is Chantilly. We live in the Greenbriar subdivision which is technically "Fairfax". Been there for several years. Love it. Lots of really nice places to live in the surrounding areas. Like the PP, I work downtown DC, drive to Vienna metro every day. PP. Door-to-door it takes me about 1 hr and 10 mins to commute. It's just part of the routine and doesn't bother me - I enjoy reading on metro and you can always get a seat. But there are days that I get bummed about spending almost 2.5 hrs of my day commuting and wishing I could spend that time with my kids instead....

I lived in Centreville for 5 years - near the intersection of 29 and Stone Road. We never had problems with crime, gangs, etc. We lived in an older townhome community (so not a swanky new place) and had decent hard working neighbors and lots of kids in the neighborhood.

There are a ton of restaurants/stores out that way (Sweetwater, Austin Grill, Trader Joes, et) that are very convenient.

I used to go to the library weekly (I am a big reader) and never saw a gangbanger there. I did see an old guy on a bike with Bible verses, but he was harmless.

Ceterville has okay sections.
We lived in Clifton, Little Rocky Run. Although I have to say the "downtowners" refused to call it Clifton, even though we shared the same zip code and legally, it is Clifton. The "downtowners" hate that!
NoVA at its best, I tell ya! So, we solved the problem and took our millions further in, where they don't debate what is Clifton and what is not. Sorry, its the truth.
Sad thing is, the "Northern aggression mentatility" ("southern ignorance", really) gets part of our tax money. So MD would really be a better choice though MD is still south of the Mason/Dixon (don't tell Clifton that). Commuted 2 hours to D.C. each way.
They can keep Clifton. Branded THEMSELVES scary.
Don't be afraid to poll neighbors yourselves when looking for a house. Would have saved us a move.

I don't get it. You moved because the "downtowners" didn't call your neighborhood Clifton? As someone who's live all over Virginia, I hate it when people generalize about Virginians having "southern ignorance."

Your millions. You really sound like an idiot. Stay in VA, please.

All those millions still can't help someone spell Centreville correctly...

Centreville may very well be a fine place to live, but I think it has an "ewwww" reputation. Sort of like Manassas.

My husband worked out there for 18 months and all I can say is, if you like townhouses, Centreville is for you! It's so new that there are tracts and tracts of new townhomes and then large patches of undeveloped land. Good shopping, though...
