Book recommendations for middle elementary school girls...

I did read To Kill a Mocking Bird and All Creatures Great and Small in 4th grade, but yes, "technically" their reading levels are h.s. Harry Potter is pretty graphic in nature, just not as well written so I guess people don't object to that suggestion.

(And PP, stuff it about kids not getting the humor. You've repeated this comment ad nauseam. Some kids won't but lots do.)

Um..,huh? I've never said that comment before...what are you talking about? I did write it above, but not any other time...?

Anything by Jean Craighead George such as Julie of the Wolves. Also Scott O'Dell!

Dolphin Diaries by Ben Baglio, who also wrote the Animal Ark books. At this age my daughter loved dolphins and just tore through this series.

Julie and The Wolves

Hmmmm...the attempted marital rape scene between 13 year olds in an arranged marriage would no pt be appropriate for a middle elementary aged kid

PP you are correct about that brief but very frank scene. That particular book is perhaps better for age 10+. But don't miss it, especially if you have a daughter. Themes of strength, independence, hardship, modernization vs traditional native ways are right on. I read it at 8 and that very brief scene was not an issue but if you're not comfortable with answering potential questions about it then wait. New berry medal folks did think it was a problem!
