I'm thinking about switching OB practices to the GW OBs (specifically the office on M Street with Dr. Metz, but I understand for delivery you get whoever is on call). Has anyone used them for prenatal care and delivery? Experiences? Do they tend to be flexible in terms of level of intervention? Constant or intermittent fetal monitoring during labor? Pushing from positions other than lying down? Thanks!

I am seeing Dr Metz (you can see my thread about pre-e). Generally I like her philosophy but I think it's common at GW - they seem very low-intervention in general. They do not do constant monitoring as standard, and everything you said is standard (positions, happy to do natural birth, you can have a tub if they have one available, you can shower, eat, etc.) you cannot deny the heplock if you are an OP patient, but really, I don't see how that would be a problem (to me, better to get a heplock when i know it's coming!).
I've been satisfied with my appointments so far (almost 37 weeks), never really run late, etc - make them first thing in the AM!. But, I do think she has issues with weight vs overall health of a woman. It's been an issue for me since I've had additional, likely unnecessary testing and all that. I also never feel rushed and communication with the MyHealth program is good. Anyone can delivery you at GW - you can request no interns, but I'm not so sure they will follow it. |
I had Keller but delivered with Metz. They are wonderful. Very flexible with intervention. Constant monitoring. Let you push however you want. My nurse actuall suggested positions. |
Metz told me intermittent was fine....interesting.
Krapf is also very sweet but on maternity leave. |
OP here - to 10:50, was there a medical reason you had constant monitoring, and was it wireless or one of the systems that tethers you to the bed? |
10:50 here, I was tethered unless I wanted to walk around, then wireless. It was especially annoying if I needed to pee. |
10:50 again, if there was a medical reason, they didn't tell me. I wasn't given a choice. Although, I have a good friend whose baby died during labor two months before I delivered so I didn't complain. |
