That's a very good quote.

Thanks for sharing.

UGH
Not all black people do this.

I am AA and my DD has been told that she's "acting white" by other black students at her school - she's in a public middle school. The comments about black kids segregating at school is very complicated and painful. It is difficult for a child to manage their feelings and not feel hurt that your own race doesn't accept you because your "hanging with those white B___s" What ends up happening is that by high school and even college those kids feel like they have to prove their blackness and explore those relationships, unfortunately it sometimes means the end of their white friendships. This happened to me growing up. As an adult I know how faulty my thinking was back then and now enjoy strong relationships with folks from a wide range of backgrounds.

I've had countless conversations with my DD about maintaining her relationships with her white friends many she's known since K and to not fall prey to what others have to say about her smarts. It's too easy to say go make friends with white people. Also it's important to understand that some black kids don't have other white people in their lives, outside of folks in authority roles. Because we live in a pretty segregated community, I think it's difficult to have an expectation that kids living in a space where they only interact with one race can form real relationships with another race.

The social aspects of race relations among kids is very complicated, so have some compassion and understanding. And I'd ask the adults on this board to really examine if they indeed have strong relationships with other races/ethnicities, strong enough to serve as an example for your kids.

I am the pp
I am 47 and heard that from some black kids before.
But not all black folk feel this way or say thus.
I was responding to the idiot telling us what to tell our kids as if they are all the same.
by the way our family has a rainbow of friends.

I would like to be judged less. I feel like with AA women (rarely with men) that I am constantly being judged. My every word is being analyzed to see if I am racist. Did she buy that fried chicken for th team because we are black? Did she really just touch my child's head? Did she really just say "girlfriend" she would never do that with white chicks.

Stop telling me I don't understand, I know I don't understand anymore than I understand raising a girl (which I have also never done). I am sure there are things you don't understand, I don't point them out ever.

I feel like I am on egg shells.

I have many good friends that don't act that way and accept me for who I am.

But I feel like the interview process is tortuous.

Why do you dislike the OP?

For starting this mess.

OP didn't start this "mess"--as in racial issues. She is just asking the question from a reverse side that no one seems to want to address. It is so much easier to blame everything on caucasians and expect all responsibility and change to come from whites.

I don't appreciate my dog choking on your chicken bones or my child having to play around your filth. And it REALLY burns my ass to have to pick up your garbage from my flowerbeds/sidewalk. Have some respect for your neighbors and yourself, and remove that big old chip from your shoulder.

I have certainly seen black people, white people, and every other race and ethnicity littering. Then you mention popeyes as a reference to blacks and fried chicken. Troll?

You guys are serious? This really happens? Wow, did not know that. Who would even think to do that--oh, I'm done eating, I think I'll just leave it here in someone's yard, flowerbed, sidewalk?

OP you would have done better to ask if what all people could do to deepen and broaden race relations and the conversations around race.
How can we better understand each other and the social construct of race in thus nation.
Instead you have invited every ignorant, misinformed idiotic m.f. To tell me:

1) I don't smile ( heffa you don't know me and I don't owe you my smile because it is my job to assuage YOUR discomfort, besides, I have cramps)

2) I need to stop making excuses ( it is not an excuse, I really do have cramps)

3) It is my job to stop so-called black on black violence.
I guess that means your job is to stop white people from shooting up schools

4) Get educated - everyone in my family is college educated including my 96 yr old GM. My parents have grad degrees, so what is the problem...you need to borrow a degree?

5) I need to Stop calling out racism...I call it like I see it and I do not recall the last time I called it in my own life.
This means your talking about more than I am

6) Stop being angry .
Yes I am pissed because you don't want to let me be responsible for me and mine, you want me to account for the millions of other black folk I have and never will meet.
Are you responsible for Miley Cyrus?

Nope, not a troll. I have certainly seen people of all races littering. But in my urban neighborhood it is black people every time. I know because I see them eating the crap on my block so I know where it came from. It's honestly not the specific food (although yeah, I've pulled more chicken bones from my dog's mouth than I can count at this point), it's the lack of respect for their own homes, their neighbors, their community. It comes across to me as a big fuck you, and people who don't respect themselves do vaguely frighten me a bit, because in the back of my mind I think they musst have no respect for anyone. And they certainly don't help to dispel stereotypes by embodying the worst of them to a T.

ignorance personified, now it is my job to make your bad thoughts about me go away.
I could live in a hood with 100 cambodian people, chances are 5 if them will be bad news.
WTF does that have to do with the other 95?.

Since they are not the majority, everything. That is, if you don't personally know or interact with cambodian people except when you have to deal with the aftermath of what those 5 people have done. Then they all are bad news in your mind.

Such is reality. Stereotypes come from somewhere and if you don't know anyone else representative of that group, you might start thinking badly about all of them.
