Not OP, but I'm presuming OP was somewhere in the DC area, not in the middle east...therefore, what is "supposed to" happen in the ME is irrelevant. When in Rome...

I probably would have given you a weird look because I would have been thrown off, and I wouldn't have know whether you wanted to do a real handshake or one of those awkward hand clasps. Give her the benefit of the doubt, or threaten her, whatever works.

Yes, this is what I was wondering. OP, are you the kind of person who is quick to see insult? Maybe the other person was, as this pp suggests, feeling awkward and you misinterpreted her reaction. Happens to us all now and then. But certainly if she rejected your left hand, that's pretty ridiculous - unless she was "fresh off the boat" from a Muslim country.

Yeah, but many immigrants bring their culture with them, and keep it.

Muslims are supposed to only use their left hand to wipe after using the bathroom, and thus eat and shake with their right hand - which is why it's considered very rude to offer your left hand to shake.

It was certainly a scoff. I held out my hand and she kind of rolled her eyes and looked at me like I had no home training. It was the equivalent of going to someones house and saying "oh.... how... quaint."

Well, they are in the wrong, not OP. If I moved to Sweden, I'd expect that I'd learn to adapt to Swedish customs--I wouldn't expect the Swedes to adapt to me. That's what causes anti-immigrant sentiment.

Surely it's overlooked then, I would assume. I guess she just wanted me to let my kid fall to the ground and probably run back through the park, drop the stroller on him, and all the stuff i had too.

In all honesty, I know that I was technically "wrong" but it wasn't as if that is how I typically introduce myself. I clearly had stuff in my right hand that I couldn't just drop and I didn't want to be rude and leave her hand just hanging there. Lol
