Extend your left hand when meeting someone if your hands are full?

This mom at the park was extending her right hand and introducing herself as my son was pitching a fit. I was trying to wrangle him and the stroller and she kind of scoffed at me like I was somehow low class for extending my left hand to her right one.

Would you take offense to this?

Best DCUM line of the day.

Maybe she "scoffed" at you because your son was pitching a fit? Or more likely, you imagined it.

And then... the men in white jackets came and put one on you and carted you off.

Not sure in the US, but in some countries it is very offensive to extend your left hand to someone. Was she Arab or Muslim? If so, that is very, very offensive.

What if your right arm is paralyzed or missing? Do you just nod, smile and say a greeting?

Son was having an "im 2, im hungry, sweaty and tired" meltdown. Not excusing just explaining.

Also, I didn't imagine it because when I held out my hand she looked at it like I was handing her a used tampon and then made an obviously "annoyed" sound.

If it felt momentarily 'off' with knowing you were extending your left hand, you probably expressed it so (or could have) with a smile, a quick "sorry" and just proceeded to shake her hand. An understanding person would realize you were still trying to reciprocate. Not sure why she scoffed, but I've been in situations (though rare) when this happened, and it was all taken with a good nature; both parties were still trying to be polite, and that was apparent.

Was she perhaps from the Middle East, or Muslim? In the ME, you are not supposed to shake with your left hand, and in Islam, it's Sunnah to only use your right hand to shake with.
