Restaurant Recommendation

I'm having lunch with a male friend tomorrow (I'm female). This is a strictly platonic friendship, I'm married, so nothing romantic or too personal. I can't think of a middle ground, he has asked me to choose the place, but I don't want to presume on his financial situation. I may be over thinking this... I'm not sure. I am used to going to very expensive places with my DH and girlfriends, he is still in grad school living the frugal life I believe, as I remember all too well. Any suggestions? No raw shellfish was his only requirement, and I prefer somewhere lively but not too loud that we can't have a conversation.

TIA!

Where? Is there an ethnic restaurant you like (say, Thai?), or a place like Hill Country BBQ, or Pain Quotidien, or Teaism...

Jaleo or Zaytina aren't too expensive if you don't over order.

OP here. Anywhere in DC. Preferences would be Penn Quarter/DuPont/Adams Morgan/Georgetown.

Jaleo and Zaytina are good recs!

I always do Busboys and Poets for things like this (meeting up with old friends). Loud, decent affordable food, and a good place to linger and talk if you want to.

Busboys & Poets is a good call. Birch & Barley, if you can get seats. Cafe L'Enfant or Meze in Adams-Morgan?

I like Busboys.

If Dupont is an option, I'd try Kramer Books:

Second vote for Kramer Books on Dupont Circle. Near Penn Quarter, more Chinatown, how about ramen at Daikaya?

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. We decided to go to Jaleo. He's been to Busboys but wanted to try something new.

Looking forward to lunch! =)
