NCIVF is great (and ISCI is included in the cost) if it works the first time, but I think its riskier financially that doing even just 1 medicated IVF. Of course, if you have to pay out of pocket for meds this could make it more attractive.
I am at DF and I think their IVF is right about at 10k w/o meds. |
Love Katherine, hate Melissa--she's clueless and insensitive. Katherine does painless blood draws and "gets" it. Kind and compassionate. |
We have 2% morphology, lowish motility with good counts. No other problem detected from blood tests and HSG. IUI worked for us the first time. I know a lot of places push IVF+ICSI for low morphology but have you tried IUI? |
I agree with the others re GW's financial office. So much more organized than my experience with CFA. They have always been helpful and get that this is a huge financial stressor for most people. |

OP here -- We haven't tried IUI b/c we'd have to pay for that out of pocket, and were thinking that given its chance of success is so low, we'd be safer going for IVF with ICSI...Both Shady Grove and Columbia have said the same thing...Interesting, though, b/c we also have no more than 2% morphology (depends on the semen sample). I might or might not be suboptimal fertility-wise (will find out soon) - Columbia said I was sub-optimal, but Shady Grove says that's not necessarily so -- so I'm waiting to do 3 day blood work and antra follicular count....PP - would you mind telling me your age and any blood work results (if you feel comfortable with that...of course, feel free not to ![]() |
We are both 33. Don't remember the details of my blood work details but they are completely normal and I ovulate on my own every 28-30 days. For my IUI cycle, day 3 antra follicle count was around 20 and I had just 1 mature follicle. We went to Shady Grove and another smaller practice and both thought we could start with IUI as first step for treatment.
We don't have insurance coverage for infertility treatment just like you so it was a difficult decision whether to go with IUI or IVF and I did quite a bit research online. We ended up deciding to do IUI for 1 or 2 cycles mostly because we just were not mentally ready to go through with IVF. Low morphology is not a very well understood fertility problem. Theory is misshapen sperm has problem fertilizing eggs but the evaluation process of morphology has gotten so strict in the last 30 years many think morphology alone has lost the ability to indicate male fertility. My husband's morphology problem are mostly heads that are too big, too round, tapered etc. Not many of them have two tails or broken middle section. That may be why we were successful with IUI. How's your husband's total sperm count? If that number is really good, then even a 2% morphology will give you a lot of normal shaped sperm. |
Have you considered international IVF - places like the Czech Republic have excellent IVF clinics and are a fraction of the cost of things in the US. Even with air fare, you'll pay MUCH less if you go abroad. |
Melissa is gone, FYI. OP: if you have no coverage, it would be worth seeing if you qualify for donated meds. If our cycle is successful, we will definitely donate our meds back to GW so those without the means can use them. I know many people do this for their treatment, and it might be of some help (every bit can help). |
