When you were 12, what did you think you wanted to me when you grew up, and how did it work out?

My 12 year old seems dead set on being an architect. I have no idea where this is coming from. I'm a lawyer, but becoming one didn't actually cross my mind until I was driving a cab for a few years, with my English lit degree in my back pocket.

Would love to hear from you about your experiences, or if your kids are old enough, their experiences.

I can't remember wanting to be a specific "thing" but I played office while other girls played house. Gathered up office supplies, made a desk, acted professional. I just wanted to be high powered and important and need my own letterhead.

I was always into computers, even before age 12, and now I write software. Worked out great for me. For others, it changes a great deal.

I wanted to be a nurse and yes, I am a nurse.
While my career has evolved quite a bit over the past 20 years, I'm still a RN but haven't been in bedside care for many years.

I wanted to be a sportscaster.

I'm a lawyer. Oh well.

My dad knew from a very young age that he wanted to be an architect and he became one. I always wanted to grow up and be married and have babies.

I wanted to be a judge (People's Court had debuted on TV around that time)

I am a lawyer and will never make it to judge but that's ok.

i wanted to be an archeologist but my parents swayed me away fron this field as it was not promising salary and stability wise. i am in IT now. i still think i missed my calling, 20 some years later. encourage your son to learn more about his interest, perhaps meet with an architect or two. my dad was an architect. they are creative yet very exact (at least my dad was).

I was certain the world was going to end in a nuclear holocaust before I finished high school. I had no plans about what to be when I grew up until I was at least a junior in high school and, even then, I really had no idea.

FYI, the world did NOT end in a nuclear holocaust

It changed. At any given moment: a teacher, a lawyer, an actress...

I'm none of those things, though I can lecture/argue/be a drama queen with the best of them.

I wanted to be either a vet or a teacher.

By high school I had settled on wanting to be a teacher. And I'm a teacher.

I think if your child is interested in being an architect allow them to explore it and develop that interest. It may change, it may not.

No joke, I wanted to be a famous rock star. I am an adult now in the Events industry. I don't know that this is where I will stay, I always have moments of wanting to do something else like become a baker.

I wanted to be a truck driver. Thought the horn seemed way cool. Instead I got a PhD in statistics.

A Stay at home mom, a nun, or an architect.

I decided against being an architect before I turned 14...and against being a nun by the time I was 13!

I am a stay at home mom, so it worked out well for me.
