God, both neighbors do. I'm in a townhouse. One neighbor has four cats and "loses" them outside all the time, hoping they won't come back. He tells me how they miss the litter box and how annoying that is. Great, cat pee is soaking into their floors. Probably because he's the type of guy to never clean the litter box.
The other neighbor's cat has some permanent skin disease and camps outside our door, spreading God knows what. Long way of saying its not the animals who matter, but the owners. If you are a responsible pet owner, I don't care and don't judge. |
I have 7 but 4 are livestock. I spend a lot of time caring for animals but I enjoy it.
I think housepets are like kids -- too many and you start to not be able to give enough attention to any of them. 3 cats live peaceably here, when I took in a 4th all hell broke loose. I do still take animals in but I rehome them ASAP. That 4th cat lives in a good home with someone else now. I never intended on keeping him but I am glad I was able to create a good life for him. His owners have 1 other cat and I get regular updates -- they dote on him and he is thriving. The key for us softies is not to KEEP them all. |
PS -- I forgot. One of the important things I do with strays when I can't find an owner is take them to the vet and get them neutered/tested/shots. If I get that money back when I rehome them, great, if not, I consider it part of my annual charity efforts. |

People with multiple pets, just know that your home and everything and everyone in it smells. |
Two dogs and two cats here. Our original idea was for two dogs and one cat, but we gained the second cat when we took him in as a stray about 7-8 years ago. As for the comment about the smells, I run into far more people that smell simply because of their personal grooming habits than because of any issues with pet odors. It isn't hard to keep your house and pets reasonably clean. Either way, I'd rather smell like pets than sound like many of the assholes that complain about them. |
People with this attitude, just know that you are a pain in the neck and no one likes you. Thanks. |
Jealous! I only have the one cat (ok, and a fish and a hermit crab), but if I had more time and more money and more space and a different (or no) husband, I'd have loads of critters. In my ideal life, I would be surrounded by animals-- but not their mess. When I'm sitting in my comfy chair with a good book, I think I'm perfectly happy, and then my cat jumps in my lap and kneads and purrs and goes to sleep, and I'm even happier.
Husband doesn't like animals in the house, and puts up with the cat with ill-grace. For those who are rude and judgmental about pets, consider that I LOVE my husband, and his attitude about animals diminishes my opinion of him in general. You don't have nearly as far to fall, in terms of good opinion. So maybe keep the nasty attitude about others' joys to yourself. |
We had 2 cats, 2 frogs, 2 goldfish but the cats ate the frogs and goldfish. |
Three dogs and a cat. The fish in our pond died off recently after having them for 10 years. |
