GOP and Race

I'm watching the RNC right now and noticing it's awwwffuulllly white. How can this party survive as the nation and world becomes more brown. Honestly, there are so few racial minorities represented. I'm also doubtful that religious minorities, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu are represented by by evidence of all the Jesus references. It strikes me as so Euro-Centric that the GOP claims all citizens should pull themselves up by their own bootstraps instead of accepting government assistance and programs. This is perhaps easier to do if you were born with a pair of boots, like most whites in their audience. Also, I'm confused by all the Democrats are elite comments. Last I knew, Chevy Chase Country Club has some power SUV's with W stickers on them, driven by white folks in their tennis whites. It just seems like the RNC is reminding me of how small and provencal they are as the world becomes more racially and ethnically diverse.

To be fair, Michael Steele spoke this evening, though MSNBC didn't bother to show him.

But, its pretty close that reality is of little concern with this crowd. Huckabee said that Palin received more votes running for mayor of Wasilla then Biden received running for President. The crowd went crazy and I'm sure you will be hearing that "fact" repeated. But, that ludicrous on the face of it. Palin ran twice. Once she received about 600 votes and once about 900 votes. So, say 1500 votes. Biden received 15,429 in Florida alone.

Next, remember Bristol Palin and how the media was supposed to give her privacy? Well, they trotted her and Levi out all by themselves prior to Guiliani's speach and put her right out in front of the TV cameras. Just to be sure the cameras didn't miss, Cindy McCain went and sat next to her. If this is how Republicans attempt to keep things private, I have gave concerns for their ability to protect national secrets.

ROFL. My husband thought it particularly interesting how McCain had to pass by/in front of other members of Palin's family in order to shake hands with Levi and go to Bristol right away- real low key in keeping with the privacy aspect.

Be careful about shaking their hands. Did you see how the youngest spat in her hand then wiped the baby's hair to smooth it down?
This is beyond ridiculous. The race issue is real. That pregnancy is symbolic. Reminds me of the Nazis encouraging lebensborn babies to populate the Reich. Yes, laugh, I think it all spooky.

Palin's speech was nothing but a snark fest. It was very disrespectful and even condescending. I'm not sure how that's going to go over beyond the true believers.

I hope you're right, Jeff. I put a question up asking what the rest of the group thought.

Did you see Roberta McCain? She looked like she totally disapproved. She barely clapped and didn't smile.

Although very well delivered, I also found her speech snide, totally negative, sarcastic, and of very little substance. Completely inappropriate for a potential vp. Is this really what the majority of Americans respond to? Nastiness?

It also creeped me out how she seemed to be using her family to gain political appeal: Iraq bound son, her baby with downs syndrome, her pregnant teenage daughter along with boyfriend. It's almost as if they are her only and best qualifications to be a vice president. The whole thing left me feeling so yucky! She's really gross.

Wasn't Biden at least as negative about McCAin? And hasn't her used the story of his first wife's and daughter's death and the train commute to be with his kids? I don't mean to defend it on either side, but it's par for the course. It just seems so much tackier when you see the other side do it.

Huckabee's line also struck me as bizarre. I don't get it. Is there some way to interpret what he said so that it's not utter nonsense? Or is it just an absolute lie?

I just did a quick Google search -- lit ooks like Biden got zero DELEGATES during the primary race, not zero VOTES.

New political maxim: A good lie in prime time is worth a thousand facts the following day.

I'm still trying to calm down about the community organizers attack. So I guess people that were part of SNCC and were willing to put their lives on the line in support of the Civil Rights movement would be considered "community organizers". Or the people, especially in minority communities that are encouraged to "give back" to the community by their parents and by their church are in that "community organizer" group. Or the people that are working with non-profits or starting groups to help people stay in their homes during this mortgage crisis are part of the much mocked group of "community organizers". I'm sorry perhaps I missed the definition of public service. Or perhaps my history lessons are faulty about change being able to start from the bottom up and come from the "community organizers" that were mocked by the GOP. Then again, since the economy is great and we are all a bunch a whiners and there are no problems that need to be addressed other than national defense I guess we really don't need the community organizers.

This is emblematic of the general hypocrisy of the GOP. The party's rhetoric is that people should take responsibility for themselves and improve their own lives. A community organizer puts his own interests aside and goes into the community assist people in doing just that. The Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, however, doesn't waste time with such trivialities. She hires a lobbyist to bring in millions of dollars of Federal grants. The people who actually take the GOP rhetoric seriously are simply suckers worthy of disdain and mockery.

amazing thread... how generally grounded, articulate, experienced people can look at the same thing and walk away with completely different points of view... Biden is even on tv this am complimenting the performance (and noting the absence of any talk about the economy and health care ... but hey, that's his job) and this thread makes her and Republicans sound like the anti-Christ.

As an admitted Republican leaning independent, I am put off by the anti-Palin hysteria frankly. I'm looking for middle of the road pragmatism in my government... I'm the voter Obama is looking for - in 7 presidential elections I have voted Democrat 3 times - and his supporters are really turning me off to be honest.
