Oh god, im confused!

Ok..without a lot of the smarty comments...in your opinion, can you please define the differences in which you think, or know, make a republican a republican and a democrat a democrat?

Im having a bit of doubt on where I stand.
Can you be neither?

Easy:

Republicans = "my way is the only way, & you must conform to my way. Any other way is wrong", hence the strong right winged evangelical base.

There are many threads on this, if you search the archives. Or you could use a "Belief Net" type of political party selector for something a bit more empirically based.

I find the opposite to be true.

Its actually not an easy question to answer since there are so many different trends in each party. Among Republicans, you have social conservatives, business conservatives, libertarians, nationalists, and blends of all of the above. Among Democrats, you have union workers, social progressives, the economic justice crowd, environmentalists, women's issues, and pro-choice.

The lines get blurred between these groups so that, for instance, a pro-choice, environmentalist can easily fit into either party.

Here's how I explained to my daughter: Everybody in the class has to bring in 50 cents for cupcakes. But one little girl's mommy didn't have 50 cents to give her. The democrats would say the little girl could still get a cupcake, everyone could share. Republicans would say, you didn't bring in your 50 cents so no cupcake for you!!

Surely there is a Republican out there to point out that the Republicans are the ones who chip in to pay for the little girl's cupcake rather than expecting the state to supply it.

My point, much less eloquently made than Obama in his 2004 keynote, is that a lot of blue and red staters would find a way to get that cupcake to the little girl. Sniping at each other does not do much to advance the level of political discourse.

I've been a Dem since before most of the people were born, I would guess, and I have not the slightest inclination to vote for McCain/Palin, but I will grant to them the compliment, back-handed though it may be, that McCain is no Bush and Palin is no Cheney. Jan 20, 2009 will be a great day for my country no matter how the election turns out!

They both screw everything up in the name of God or fairness.

True. Those republicans just might chip in to buy the cupcake. And then break their arm patting themselves on the back afterwards. Have a cupcake, but forget about children's health insurance. After all, McCain voted against expanding it. Bush vetoed that. So when the kid gets diabetes from that cupcake, where will those republicans be?

Back to the cupcake theory.

Dems will give the kid the cupcake, but only after adding on an extra 30 cents to everyone else's cupcakes. They may promise to give the extra change back, but instead will buy a muffin for the teacher.

The Reps will start a donation and buy the kid a cupcake. All extra money will be donated to the NRA.

Wouldn't the democrats say you have to give 30 cents of each cupcake to the government? And wouldn't the school tell you how your cupcake should be made, including what kind of frosting and how much could be used?
