Really? What is so bad about visible weeds? It's not like there are car parts in the front yard. In our neighborhood, we've got a few neighbors who hang laundry out to dry in their backyards. I've had other neighbors complain that it looks trashy, but I'm all for it. More environmentally friendly than using the dryer. And, what makes it look trashy? |
Well, the question is: do you want to be the neighbor that people complain about? Because he's not the only one complaining, guaranteed. |
What would be the basis of the lawsuit? What kind of a service can you find that hand picks weeds? Most of the services just want to spray Round Up. |
The same people who complain about things looking 'trashy' are usually the same ones that tell you to F-off if you say ANYTHING about them. The 'do as I say, not as I do' crowd. |
Sounds like my yard. Weedy, but mowed and overall green -- and not full of herbiicides or fertilizer. I think he is being unreasonable. |
Your lawn your rules. Plus if you are mowing it every week I doubt he can tell by sight that you have weeds.
A weed is nothing more than a plant in a location you don't want it. There are plants that are considered weeds near our house in Vermont, but you would have to pay $10 or more to get them at a nursery down here. And how does he know that the weeds in your yard didn't come from him? Is the wind always blowing toward his house. Next time he says, I'd like to talk to you about your lawn, respond with, I'm glad, because I think weed seeds are coming from your yard into mine. |
Because they have the right to think that looks trashy. You have the right to think it's not. People can complain if someone's yard is full of weeds. It's up to the OP to decide what she wants to do about it, if she wants to be "that house" or not, but not doing something would be her choice. And it would be her neighbors' choice to be irritated about it. |
I'm too busy with the kids to worry about what my neighbors say about my weed-filled, overgrown "lawn." Don't sweat it. I'm sure your 401k isn't optimized, your gutters need to be cleaned and you aging Asian hatchback left an oil spot on the street. Whatever. |
No way should you do anything about it. As long as it is mowed, that is fine. We have a lawn service mow our lawn but I only want organic fertilizers and things used, so guess what, we have weeds. It doesn't look bad b/c it is mowed short regularly. We have an annoying neighbor who keeps pointing out the "weeds" in our front yard and asking if I need him to pick them. Well those "weeds" were purchased at Johnson's & planted by our landscaper & were not cheap, so to each their own.
Also wanted to add that we do the non-pesticide route for the same reason, 2 toddlers & 2 small dogs. 2 summers ago we spent the weekend at friends house who had a perfectly manicured, gorgeous lawn. Well that sunday night we ended up at the 24 hr vet after my dog had a seizure, & my dog was in liver or kidney distress (can't remember). He had to be at the vet w/ an iv for almost a week and the tests came back positive for some type of herbicide. He had spent most of the weekend in the yard & then regularly washed his paws by licking them. He almost died, and we were stuck w/ a several thousand dollar vet bill. I have no interest in exposing my dogs or toddlers to that type of stuff. OP stick w/ your gut & ignore the neighbor. |
None of his business. Plants grow where they like. "Damaging his property"? That's a bunch of bull.
Mow your lawn and tell him to spray what he likes on his but to keep away from yours. |
OP here - I love this! LOL Sadly, though I'm pretty sure that's not the case. He sprays regularly and most of his lawn is totally weed-free. He's right that where our two lawns connect, the weeds from our lawn are encroaching onto his. |
You can find a service that uses non-toxic applications to keep weeds at bay. Crap lawns are annoying, even in "solidly middle class" neighborhoods. I say this looking out of my dining room window at two yards that look like absolute shit. Weeds everywhere, horrible mowing, no edging, hatchet jobs on the shrubs. It's infuriating when able-bodied people let their yards go, and it *does* bring down the neighborhood. If you don't like doing yard work, fine, but shell out the money for somebody to take care of your lawn so the rest of us don't have to look at your mess. |
ITA. One of the worst environmental sins we ever committed was this idea that everyone has to have this little patch of perfect green in front of their house. I intentionally sprinkle my yard with dutch white clover because it's good for bees. I would never, ever spray herbicide or pesticide in my lawn. Nor would I ever stop a four year old from making a wish on a dandelion. http://www.earthyreport.com/site/is-your-lawn-bad-for-the-environment/ |
I would love it if my neighbor offered to pick the weeds in my lawn. I'd take him up on that in a heartbeat. |
