Racism in DC middle schools

Anonymous
DH and I were appalled with our kid coming home this year with a lot of "jokes" targeting Mexicans. What's with that? Latinos aren't really a presence in the school (Deal) or the community. Does the anti-Hispanic racism here reflect the general US racism? Is it something that Black and White kids can safely bond over? Our kid apparently shares these "jokes" with a mixed group. Are we so focused these days on anti-gay bullying that we've forgotten other forms of hateful behavior? In any case I hope this thread starts a discussion about how to stop this. Needless to say that we told the little doofus that this kind of stupid hateful nonsense has NO place in our house, and if we ever heard it again there would be trouble. The race and class prejudice still floating around middle school these days is disgusting.

Racism is thick in our country. Keep talking about it with your kids.

This is normal. Keep doing what you're doing so he knows it isn't acceptable but don't expect the jokes to stop when the kids are amongst themselves.

Mexicans have become the "whipping boy" of US society. Blame the illegals.

This is exactly the problem (OP here) I tried to talk sense with my kid: how would you feel if you were poor and your best option for a better life was to go to another country and take the underpaid shit jobs that the overweight lazy native born people just don't want to do anymore? And you're going to mock those people who do your dirty work? This is the by-product of all that political correctness: it is no longer acceptable to mock people for their skin color, religion, or sexual lifestyle but raw class prejudice is somehow still fine. Re: "illegals" so the middle schoolers are studying ancient history this year and what does my kid come home with: "Rome fell because they could not control their borders and there was too much immigration" - apparently, a little education is a bad thing. They don't get it: WE are lazy Romans at an orgy laughing at the slaves and we deserve to fall....

My family has been in this country before Texas was part of the US. So I hate to tell you we have been part of this country probably before your family came over some boat.

Correct english would have been the following:

"Then you should have used more of that time learning proper English."

Dumbass.

We had the same experience--also have a 7th-grader at deal who'd bring those appalling jokes. What's up with that?

They will be the majority in the US. Get used to it and get along or you will likely face negative repercussions.

Deal has a lot of kids who find "humor" in being racist, sexist and judgemental in general.. It is an incredibly disturbing problem at Deal. Very, very ugly problem.

Deal is a big enough place that my saying my child has not experienced this certainly doesn't mean that your child has not experienced this... but my child and her friends have not experienced this. We've found the atmosphere to be very supportive, in fact.
