I've read stories about weight gain during an ivf cycle. Is it water weight, or less excersise? Or is it relly weight that comes on from the meds? |
I did not experience it during my several cycles. |
Pushing up because I'm curious too |
For me, I gained a little on the birth control pills. The rest of my cycles I didn't really gain weight, but I was horribly bloated from slight OHSS after the egg retrievals. I couldn't button my pants for close to two weeks and I looked several months pregnant. The extra progesterone also slows down your digestive track which adds to bloating as well. |
One cycle I gained on birth control and lost while cycling from severe nauseau...so by the time I was done I leveled back to where I started
Second cycle I was severely hungry during my 2ww and ate sooo much, I gained about 4 pounds and haven't been able to lose it, it's been about 3 months. |
I probably gained about 10 lbs. per IVF cycle after everything was said and done. But, I had OHSS, too.
BUT...I will say, that I stopped exercising, and really stopped watching what I was putting in my mouth. So I might not be the best example of what a 'normal' weight gain might be. When I was finally pregnant (with twins) after my 3rd IVF...after they were born, I actually weighed 10lbs less than my starting weight. Go figure... I am still trying to lose that 10-20lbs I would like, to feel good physically and emotionally. |
I have done a bunch of IVF cycles, never changed my eating or exercise which was pretty active regularly. Other than the 2-4 week downtime of exercise, I was shocked at the weight gain. I understand it's from a few things - the meds first and foremost (not the shots as much as the progesterone) and then if you get pregnant, your body comes to a halt with what it will burn. But it all comes off.
Most IVF'ers I know of say their gain was pretty high. It's to be expected. My ob is fine with it, said I'm actually doing great. I just laugh, it's funny to me at this point. |
I've started my first IVF cycle, ER is tomorrow. I've already gained about 5 lbs, likely because I've done ZERO exercise since starting my Menopur injections. I'm hoping once I can start being more active again the excess weight will come off. And if the IVF cycle is successful, I'd be more than happy to keep gaining weight! |
I never exercised before, so I know that my weight gaining from not exercising.
I'd gained 3 lbs by the time I had my beta. I am very bloated and uncomfortable, and I blame it on the progesterone. |
^^ weight gain isn't from not exercising. |
I gain around 4 pounds. I did well on my diet, so I would say 1 is from not exercising and diet and 3 is from meds for me. |
I gained WAY too much, but I had been on weight watchers and had been VERY active prior to that point.
I did get pregnant and have not yet been released to working out like I used to prior to IVF. I've been told I can when I stop progesterone/estrogen. I'd say if it's bothering you mentally, definitely do something you can within your control - go to a farmers market and get some fresh, local produce....go for a walk on the Mall. Something YOU can control since IVF is so very, very much out of your hands. |
I'm in 2ww on my first IVF cycle but have already gained. Still hoping it will come off. For me it has been having to not exercise. I didn't expect to stop but I became nervous to in any way mess up the cycle and also, my schedule with the injections and appointments left no time for exercise. Also, for some reason, I became an eating machine. I feel really gross! This is one of the hardest parts for me about the cycle. Granted if I get pregnant I could care less. But doing this many times is going to be tough for my self esteem. |
The weight gain is real. Between a year+ of IUIs and IVF/FETs, I've gained about ten pounds. The docs make you so paranoid about limiting activity that you have no shot to keep off what the meds and the progesterone are adding on. It's tough. BUT worth it... I got a BFP from my second IVF this month, and my nurse has told me once I'm able to stop the progesterone I'll slim back down, even though I'm pregnant. |
I gained about 10 pounds due to mild OHSS and looked 5-6 months pregnant during 2 ww, but then lost it due to severe morning sickness. |
