OBs at Georgetown

Dr. Bowles-Johnson at GT is my current OB, and I've found her to be extremely rude and condescending. My appts with her are really unpleasant! I know her bedside manner alone may not reflect on her competence, but I'm also concerned that she never listens to or answers my questions or knows what's in my chart from one visit to the next. Despite this, I'd like to stay at GT since it's close to my home and has a well-regarded NICU. I've read about Drs. Breen, Colie and Wulf on this forum but would love to hear about some of the other physicians in this practice. Thanks!

I saw Dr Wulf and Dr Mazloomdoost. I liked both of them and thought they were great.

I saw Dr Wulf for a few appointments during pregnancy and she was the one on call during my labor and ended up doing my c-section. She is not the warmest person, but never been rude/unpleasant to me (unlike a few of the other drs in the practice, including Breen and Bowles-Johnson), and she is highly competent (did a great job with the surgery). I used to see Dr Buek whom I loved and haven't yet found another doctor at that practice who is anywhere close to him in personality/bedside manner. I've been thinking about switching before getting pregnant again, but like you I am hesitant because I want to stick with the GU hospital for delivery.

Good luck.

Just out of pure curiosity, could the previous poster please define as to what they are describing as rude in reference to your interactions with Drs. Breen and Bowles-Johnson?

The question I have for the posters here is: why are you set on delivering at Georgetown?

I had my baby at Georgetown and subsequently am changing all of my doctors as I found the level of patient care to be unacceptable. To begin with, the nurses were resistant to my interest in doing what I could to help labor progress rather than just sit in bed and watch TV. Several of the physicians in the OB practice at Georgetown were unprofessional and the residents were constantly popping in my room for one thing or another. At times I was unsure who was the attending physician who was making decisions about my care as there were so many strangers (residents) involved.

The risk that one takes by staying with the OB practice at Georgetown, already not thrilled with a doctor or two in the practice, is that the doctor you don't like could be the attending the day you deliver.

I am the poster above. Bowles-Johnson was very curt with me and basically made me feel like I was wasting her time. Well excuse me, I had an appointment scheduled - so it wasn't like she was doing me a favor by seeing me. At one point she essentially made fun of something that I had been told by another doctor. I just found her cold and condescending. And I can pretty much say the same for my one interaction with Breen - cold, condescending, and rude. I am guessing she was in a hurry (she saw me at 1:10 for an appointment that was scheduled for 11 am), but I don't think that's any reason to be rude. (and BTW, as an aside, not one word of apology for being so late!) She clearly wanted me out of there as quickly as possible. And the pelvic exam that she did was not nearly as thorough as ones I am used to from other doctors.

Now, I know there are people, both on this board and "in real life", who like these doctors and happy with the care they receive from them. I am quite willing to allow for the possibility that I happened to catch each of these doctors on a bad day. I just don't see any reason to go back and see them again when there are other doctors who have a better bedside manner and can give me better quality of care (well, there were - I used to see Dr Buek, who of course is no longer there).

The GU practice has big administrative problems. It seems that many of the doctors don't handle the patient load and double or triple or maybe even quadruple booking that occurs on a regular basis. They end up being very short and pressured to get you out. I would not mind waiting for 2 hours, as long as I received appropriate care. You go to a doctor to obtain medical advice not get shuffled through a system which is what is happening now.

The high risk group is much better. It may be that since you have a serious complication in the first place there are more substantive issues to discuss but they also seem much more knowledgable. The generalists seem rushed and quite honestly I don't think think they even know the research or evidence based answers to many questions off the top of their heads.

I would go to GU for high risk. or low risk, if my only options were Sibley or GU I would still choose GU. GU allows doulas, you can push back on the nurses, the doctors and nurses aren't as natural friendly as they used to be but they are not the home of the elective c-section as Sibley seems to be now.

I have been with GT for 5 years and I am ready to change.

I used to see Dr. Bray who I thought was great. She had good bedside manner as I was dealing with a miscarriage and I was disappointed that she was not around when I became pregnant later in the year.

My next Dr was Buek - and I thought how lucky I was to have wound up with a dr with such good bedside manner and communication skills. When Buek left/stopped seeing patients last December I was quite disappointed as I was 6 months pregnant and now needed to change primary drs again.

I have not been happy with any of the drs I have yet to see at GT since December. This includes Collie - running over 2 hours late for an appt - wound up seeing NP instead which if I was going to do that - would not have booked appt w Collie to begin with or waited the 2 hours.
Breen - constantly late and in my opinion does not listen to the responses of questions she asks.
Mazloomdoost - sent me to have an unnecessary non-stress test - and then called me 2 weeks later with results (results available that day).
Yuri - who I wanted to ask questions about his background / philosophy as I needed to select a new primary physician and he told me that he didn't have time for my questions - that I should make an appt to discuss these items. I was at an appt when I was seeing a dr every 2 weeks towards the end of my pregnancy - I was low risk so all you are doing is measuring growth and checking heart rate and you can't give me 5 minutes for quesitons.

OK enough of my rant - why do I stick with GT? I have very quick deliveries and GT hospital is closest to my home and I am hoping that Dr Buek is going to return to GT in a role of seeing patients soon.

I delivered at GU 4 months ago and was actually very pleased. I was followed throughout my pregnancy by Dr Colie, which was my GYN and that I really like as she makes you feel comforatable and has great bedside manners. Yes, the wait can be long, but the quality of care and expertise is worth waiting for, in my opinion. I saw also couple times thoughout my pregnancy Dr Mazloomdooost (?) and liked her, too, though she seemed little overwhelmed maybe as she was fairly new. Dr Bowles-Johnson ended up delivering our baby, and we were very impessed by her expertise and skills. She was highly competent and took the right decisions. The nurses were nice and supportive both in labor and delivery and postpartum.

Dr. Wulf isn't good at all.

I switched from Georgetown OB/GYN to FoxHall OB/GYN. Foxhall is rignt around the corner and Dr. Engel, Dr. Sarifian, and Dr. Lightfoot are great.

I had my prenatal appointments with Dr. Engel.

I find that many people will write in who dislike a particular doctor or two in the Georgetown practice. For my 1st baby, I saw Dr. Amini and many women would slam him on DCUM...while I thought he was the greatest. It used to bother me - but then I realized that it would make it easier for me to schedule an appt with him if everyone else wasn't trying to see him too! I have seen many other doctors, and the nurse practitioner when other weren't available - and I have yet to have a bad experience. And, my delivery could not have been better (it was with Dr. Buek - who I know is very popular...I was sad when he left).

Yes, I switched from doctor Wulf to Br Buek and he left in the middle of my pregnancy. I felt rushed with him and there was a long wait to be seen. He also allowed Med students sit in on my appointments which I didn't like. I felt I couldn't speak freely to him.

Dr Engel was always on time, made time to answer my questions, and didn't give me rushed answers. He was delighted with my "list" of questions.

For what its worth, I see Dr. Carolyn Gorman at GU and think she's wonderful -- pleasant, great bedside manner and encourages me to ask questions.

Dr. Gorman is AWESOME. She was my OB throughout my pregnancy. I'd seen Bowles-Johnson for an annual visit before and did not like her so I switched when I found out I was pregnant. Dr. Colie delivered my daughter and she was great too. But I love Dr. Gorman. She just had a baby in June.
