DCUM advertisements: What are you getting served and what do you think about them?

I'm okay with ads, but wish some of them weren't so adult-themed. I often cruise this site at work and at home around my kids. Never know what ads will load when I click on another page on the site!

I had just typed "small companies" into Word and then clicked on DCUM to see an ad for small businesses. Freaky. Does it even pick up on stuff in Word documents?

Now I have an ad for billing and coding schools. Is my boss telling me to get off DCUM and find a new career?

Try googling santorum a few times, that should clean things up! (just kidding)

I just reviewed our Adsense settings and there is an option for blocking Dating advertisements. I blocked that, so maybe this will alleviate this problem a bit. There is also an option to block ads for reproductive health, but I've left that for now. I can block that also if it seems to be a problem.

I've got Tinyprints (which I get a lot and have used them before) and ebags (i did a search for Tumi recently). And of course the everpresent Natural Gas Dryers, which isn't so fun now that the spelling has been corrected.

Jeff,

I would never tell you how to run your site! This is a source of income for your family and I would never want to regulate how you provide access to a board that is invaluable and free! Since you've already done it, thank you very much, but please feel free to do as you please with your site.

Will blocking Dating also block mail order brides? If so, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I'm getting ads for chocolate, gold and tiny prints. Oh, and Mayo Clinic. Go figure.

I'm getting Petunia Pickle Bottom and Mayo Clinic, both of which are not off-base for me. But earlier today I got one for some kind of pet service and I neither have pets nor have done any animal related searches in who knows how long (if ever). The ads don't bother me and I am grateful for DCUM staying afloat!

Obviously this is a choice that you are free to make. But, I really wish you would consider displaying our ads. I've tried to be careful to place ads in areas that don't distract from using the website. I've rejected a ton of advice to put ads in places that they were harder to ignore. But, advertising revenue is the only income we get from DCUM. If everyone blocked ads, the site would cease to exist.

Fair enough. I respect what you've built here, so I don't want to take money out of your pocket. But does my having Adblock really decrease your revenue? I thought Google pays you per page view. So if my browser just renders the page without certain elements, does that really affect your ad revenue? (This assumes of course that I don't plan on clicking on ads to buy things.)

Google records both page views and advertisement impressions. If you are aren't' loading ads, there are no impressions. Revenue is derived from impressions. If it's just you blocking ads, obviously it's no big deal. Also, there are some people who can't deal with the animation in some ads and I certainly don't think they should be forced to put up with ads. But, widespread ad blocking would be a serous problem for us.

Ahh, I see now. I will take steps to view your ads!

I get vanilla websites like shutterfly and comcast. For those getting the adult sites - what are YOU googling?
