Thoughts? How can we avoid electing someone awful. Vincent Orange won the last special election (at large) with a small fraction of the vote -- there were just so many on the ballot. And so many I would have rather seen won than him (had a hard time deciding who to vote for)!
The field looks even more crowded in this special election. |
It's probably too late for this election, but one possibility is instant runoff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant-runoff_voting) by ranking the candidates and doing repeated counts, dropping the bottom candidate each time, until someone gets a majority. |
23 candidates? First one to 100 wins.
|
Instant runoff voting would be great. Won't happen for this election though.
Thoughts on Kenyan McDuffie? Tim Day? |
One of the candidates in the special election is Kathy Henderson. I just discovered her unintentionally funny Twitter feed. Some samples:
KHenderson029 I am formally trained as a biologist, underscoring the completion of my studies at Howard University. KHenderson029 I am empowering to bring Cheesecake Factory, Harris Teeter, art galleries, & jewelry boutiques like Bedazzled to #Ward5. #PositiveChange KHenderson029 @IMGoph Do not attempt to promulgate your positions on me. You are not sure to most likely lose in a battle of wits with me. KathyHenderson @stephanieliotta Your underfounded attacks are unsensical. The dangers of streetcars are well-known & I oppose them. And, my personal favorite: KHenderson029 .@susiecambria @bogrosemary I am a leader & advisorate for issues of importance to ensure peace, tranquility, justice, jobs, & vendettas. More here: https://twitter.com/#!/KHenderson029 |
Because really, what's missing from Ward 5 is a . . . Beadazzled.
Although I would be inclined to vote for anyone who is pro-vendetta. |
Oh yeah, Kathy Henderson is crazy. I've seen her on the listserves for years. She's very self important. She kept saying at the debate today, "I'm the ONLY candidate who..." The audience started laughing toward the end!
I'm torn between Kenyan McDuffie and Tim Day. Tim is a Republican who ran against Thomas in the general and uncovered the money scandals -- from the outside. He's an accountant and a gay, black man. To Kathy's question of, "where were you when my neighborhood was facing strive, dodging bullets etc for 15 years?" he replied, "where were you when my brother was shot?" https://twitter.com/#!/Tim_Day_DC Kenyan is a smart reasonable guy. Ward 5 native. Sensible. Has kids and cares about public education. https://twitter.com/#!/KenyanForWard5 #ward5se was trending on Twitter in DC today. Certainly wasn't impressed with: 1. Wilds (whose first issue was getting rid of speed traps. Seriously, is that your main issue?); 2. Hunter (got all red faced over gay marriage, which he's against but wouldn't say that -- he was the only candidate against it btw. Plus he took campaign donations from a strip club but is now pushing for a moratorium on more. McDuffiie nailed him on the irony/possible conflict there!); 3. Henderson. See previous comments. Also, she would re-elect everyone on the Council and the Mayor (was the only candidate to have said so). Enough said. A question in my mind is: could Tim Day (R) win in a general/special election? B/c I think it could be good to have a (liberal) Republican in there --and an accountant. |
Double posting. I don't at all want to see Kathy Henderson on the Council, but it should be noted that the Twitter feed that Jeff linked to states that it is a "Parody/fake account." That's right there in the link that Jeff included. |
I honestly didn't know it was a fake account. I was reading her feed in my Twitter client and it doesn't show the line about it being fake. Based on your message, I looked at her feed in the web interface and now see that you are correct. |
I move we forgive Jeff and take it as another lesson that
(a) we should always realize that anything we see online may be a put-on and (b) we should all remember when we post a put-on that some people are likely to take it seriously. |
