DH said the same thing to dd's friend the other day (6 yo). She was saying goodbye and it just came out, like a reflex. Granted, we do "love" these close friends of our children -- they're kind of like our own kids at times, but still...
It's just a reflex. Ignore. |
Hahahaha! This has happened to me. Yes, your boss is probably mortified. On some subliminal level he might have meant it--but he was probably thinking about his wife/girlfriend as he was speaking to you. Please, please, ignore it. Gaawwwddd. That is so awkward. |
rofl. Okay, wait, hey, not fair! |
+1 Aww, poor guy is probably mortified! |
I once called my boss Dad by mistake. I'd be mortified if he were writing in for internet advice about it. |
yes ignore, honest mistake. Sometimes I called a co-worker my kid's name. |
My (male) boss has said this to me many times before. To my face, over the phone, over email. He always says it to mean "I love your work", or "You're awesome", so it's not like the ILY he would say to his wife. I typically react to this by rolling my eyes and kicking him out of my office so I can get back to work. It depends on the context, of course, but in this scenario it really doesn't mean much beyond a professional pat on the back. It's just his personality. |
Time to ask for that raise! |

I told someone to wait in my office once while, "Mommy makes copies." After the startled look, we both laughed. |
If this had happened to me, with my boss and the working relationship that WE have, I would do this, at every available opportunity, and make it into the joke it so wants to be. But only if it was clear that he was not mortified and freaking out about this. |
I was at a campaign event with my boss one time. As he was leaving he was kissing his daughters (all three of them) goodbye. I was standing behind the last daughter and he just moved on from her to me and kissed me goodbye. He realized pretty quickly what he had done but as it was a public event he didn't react, but I could tell he was pretty horrified. I ignored it but made sure to remind the other staff of his "affection" for me! |
That's what his SO probably does. |
![]() Love this thread. Thanks for making me laugh, OP, I needed it! |
Me too! I was slightly embarrassed...but we both laughed it off. |
