I never thought that I would "graduate" from TTC to this forum but I'm so happy to be here! I found out today that I am pregnant via HPT. My fertility clinic does not let me come in for my beta for 10 more days and I'd really like to go to an OB/GYN for a blood pregnancy test in the meantime. Honestly I would be happy not to return to the clinic because I did not have a good experience there. The crazy thing is that I do not have an OB/GYN yet - moved here last year and have just been seeing fertility doctors. Can I call up any OB/GYN and go in for a blood pregnancy test even though I am not yet an established patient? |
Ask your RE for some referrals. It all depends on what you want, large practice vs single physician, midwife and such. I think any new doc will get you in quickly, especially since you underwent fertility treatment.
Out of curiosity, why not for 10 days? If you have a positive home test I would think they want to monitor the HCG levels every other day for a week to make sure they are going up appropriately as well as check your progesterone levels although I assume you're already on progesterone supplements. |
My RE brought me in the next day to confirm via blood test, I don't know why they would make you wait 10 more days. They usually make you wait 10 days from the ovulation day, but if you are getting a positive on an hpt, it should be well past 10 days now. Also, they should be checking your progesterone levels too. Maybe you should call back and ask to talk to your RE and not one of the nurses. This makes no sense to me.
I think it might take you a while to get in with someone else to get a blood test done. Do you have a primary care doctor? They can order a test for you too. |
I don't understand the RE's reasoning either! They just said I had to wait 14 days after the 5 day transfer (in other words, 19 DPO) to come in, and I had a positive HPT today at 4 days post transfer (9 DPO). I'll call them tomorrow morning I guess and ask to speak to one of the doctors directly. No, don't have a primary care doctor either.. bad I know. |
You can always go to your PCP for the blood test and ask for a referral from there. Very happy for you -- congrats OP! |
23:41 - two of my friends at SG were told the same thing about timing - they both called their nurses and begged to go in earlier - one was allowed the other wasn't. My advice is to call your Dr if your nurse says no - there is no reason they shouldn't be willing to start earlier. Just be warned - you might end up with more blood work overall because you keep returning every 48 hours until your HCG reaches 2000. |
The reason that many clinics make you wait is that they want to avoid the issues sometimes associated with early positives (residual trigger shot or a chemical pregnancy) and getting patients hopes up - which is why they specifically tell you not to use HPTs!!!!!!! By waiting until 18dpo, you are less likely to have false hope and have a real pregnancy. In addition, the clinic has a much better sense of your numbers and where they should be because their comparison point is other patients who were tested at 18dpo and not 9dpo. '
Since you got pregnant via ART, it is unlikely an OB will even see you for an early beta, as you are still under the care of your RE for this pregnancy. As hard as it sounds, I would sit tight for a few more days and see if you can at least come in at 14dpo, which is the marker that most (but not all) REs and OBs use for a beta. Good luck! |
Trigger shots contain HCG which remains in your system for as long as 10 days post transfer. As PP notes it's for this reason that most REs won't test you for at least 10 days post transfer (i went to Shady Grove and they tested at 14 days as I recall). HPTs can detect minuscule amounts of HCG, so if you test too early at home there's a high chance of a false positive.
OP, not to discourage you, but I'd urge you to wait the additional 10 days and get the blood test once the chances of HCG in your system have diminished. I worry that at this early, your HPT is actually picking up HCG from your trigger shot. I know it's hard to wait, but any test too early has a high risk of a false positive. An OB will likely tell you the same. |
I agree. And unfortunately, a high percentage of pregnancies that are detected this early turn out to be chemicals. I had a similar early positive at home (sans trigger shot) that never showed up in the blood test at the doctors office a few days later. I apologize if I sound discouraging, but I've been through this particular wringer many times and learned the hard way not to get my hopes up too early. Keeping fingers crossed for you! |
The OP hasn't said what DPO she is, just that whatever day she is, her clinic wants her to wait ANOTHER 10 days. At my clinic, you went in at 14DPO, which it sounds like people here are agreeing with. Assuming the OP has waited at least 10 days before taking an HPT, her clinic would be saying to wait until 20 DPO to come in for a beta, which seems crazy to me. I'm assuming the OP isn't testing before the 2ww.
So the question is, OP, what DPO are you now? |
If you hadn't been going to a clinic, most OB offices wouldn't have you come in for anything before the first appointment, often at 6-8 weeks. HPT are reliable and most pregnancies aren't confirmed by blood test ever because by the time you go in for the first appointment, the pregnancy can be seen. |
HCG shots typically stay in your systerm at 1000mg/day - so for most of us that's day 10 days post shot - she's 4 days post a 5 day transfer - which means she's at least 11 days from her trigger shot - the HPT should be accurate by now
No idea why SG makes you go in 14 days after a 5 day transfer when they also let people go in 14 days after an IUI |
I went to Capital Women's Care. I called as soon as I had a positive HPT (was not a patient there before) and they had me come right in for bloodwork and an early ultrasound to date the pregnancy when I was only 5.5 weeks. |
5.5 weeks, 6 weeks, okay. |
I went to Capital Women's Care too but they didn't see me until I was 8 weeks. Maybe it was just busier at that time for them but they didn't seem interested in getting me in before then and I had the same experience with my other Obs for my other two kids. For my first pregnancy 13 years ago though I didn't have an OB and instead went to verify it with my GP who gladly took a blood test and got back to me that day. Then i followed up with the OB at 8 weeks. You might have more luck getting in sooner for a blood test with a GP.....even a new one. |
