The numbness in my hands/fingers is getting bad, I was told that my uterus is likely pressing on a nerve. Any tips on what would help with this would be appreciated! Thank you ![]() |
Sounds like pregnancy induced carpal tunnel. The only "fix" comes through delivery, unfortunately. GL. |
I had it in my left hand...
It comes and goes but it was worst around week 21. It is super annoying--if nothing else. |
Carpel tunnel for sure. I got cortisone shots, after a referral from my OB. It can takes weeks to resolve after delivery so you might want to think about it. Holding a newborn and nursing is hard if your hands are numb or painful. |
It's carpal tunnel syndrome-- get some wrist splints at CVS. |
Agreed with PPs - it sounds like Carpal Tunnel. Aside from the recommendations above, watch what you carry and do with your wrists as much as possible (obviously, you have to use them). For example, if you work a lot at a keyboard, make sure your wrists are supported. Also, be mindful of what bags you carry. For example, grocery bags really bother my wrists and elbows, so I have DH help me with them if we're going to walk long distances. |
Thanks everyone - I have it in both hands and it gets worst at night ![]() I thought it would immediately go away after delivery ![]() |
this is the PP who got shots. It does go away quickly for some people. I tried splints and being careful, etc., during the pregnancy but it just got very bad for me. If it gets to the point where you are dropping things and flat out can't feel your hands several times a day, the shots make sense. It was also waking me up at night. Of course, I think you could get the shots after delivery if it didn't go away but you might not love going to get it done with a newborn on your hands. I'm glad you're going to discuss with your OB. |
I had this and used the carpal tunnel wrist braces (you can find them at CVS, Target, Giant, etc.). I wore them every night while sleeping and the numbness and pain was gone during the day. |
I had this--similar to what many PPs described. Very bad at night, complete numbness at random points throughout the day. My OB suggested that I use one of those hand exercise balls or squeezing things a few times a day and that really helped. I did that and never felt that I needed the shots. It went away slowly after delivery but was never as bad once I gave birth. It does get better! |
I had that with my first. My doctor told me it normally goes away a few weeks after delivery, but mine took longer. I think it was about 2-3 months after delivery until I was completely back to normal. I think I remember it starting to get better shortly after delivery and it didn't effect me caring for the baby, it was just annoying. |
OP here - Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I would've never thought that this would be the most uncomfortable pregnancy symptom I'd end up having, I had actually never heard of this happening during pregnancy! I want my hands back !!!!Extremely uncomfortable and annoying feeling and I have 7 more weeks to go for baby.

I have the same, and dr confirmed it's carpal tunnel. I wear a nighttime wrist splint on each wrist, from CVS (dr said to look for "Futura" brand). Seems to help a lot. Hope you feel better soon; it is no fun. |
Yes, I had this too. It started with the numbness/tingling and got so bad that I'd just wake up crying. It felt like my hand was in a fire. My OB didn't seem to get how bad it was just telling me to use braces on my hands at night (I did). My perinatologist gave me the ok referral to get the shots, but I was surprised at how hard it was to find a doctor to do it. I would get the shots before it gets too bad, because it can create long lasting and permanent nerve damage and create post-delivery problems that you don't want too. I was kicking myself for letting it go so long (finally got them around the 8 month mark). |
PP here - also, the shots took about a week to work on each hand. For most people, I heard the relief was immediate to 24 hours, so I was depressed when it didn't work, but it eventually 'took'. |
