We read a lot of lift the flap and touch and feel books at that age (ie: 'That's not my ___' series, etc) . As well as Hug, Goodnight Gorilla, Who's Toes are These, Who's Knees are These, Busy Fingers, etc.

I'm sure there's tons more, but I recall those being some of the favorites.

My kids liked all of the Mother Goose nursery rhymes. At that age, children are most interested in the pattern and rhyme of language more than the plot of the story. Look for books with simple illustrations, too.

In addition to recs already mentioned by PPs, faves include Pajama Time and various Dr Seuss.

I think that the best books for that age are the Helen Oxenbury series: Clap Hands, Say Goodnight, All Fall Down, and Tickle, Tickle. Make sure to get the big board books, roughly 10"x10" not the miniature box set.

The illustrations are endlessly interesting to babies and easy to relate to and the words are just right for that age.

Like a PP, we like the touch and feel ones (touch and feel farm, touch and feel curious george at the zoo) and peek-a-boo flap books (where's baby's belly button).
We also love the Dr Suess board books (not the longer ones) - like Dr Suess's ABCs. And our favorite is probably 'B is for Bear' by Roger Priddy.

There's a series of Pekaboo books that DS loved: Barn Peekaboo, Bathtime Peekaboo, Baby Faces Peekaboo (he's 2 now and when I asked him to pick out a book that his baby brother would like, this is the one he chose, So cute). My World and Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. Brown Bear Brown Bear and Polar Bear Polar Bear. I agree with the Helen Oxenbiry books, Perfect for that age.

Sandra Boynton: But Not The Hippopotamus, Dogs, Barnyard

Eric Carle: Brown Bear, Hungry Caterpillar

There is a box set that they sell at Target that has 5 Little Monkeys, 5 Little Ladybugs, and 5 Bright Stars (these are great because the words are simple/easy to remember and I recite them from memory a lot for DS and he recognizes the words...great distraction)

I love trains by Sturges

Goodnight Moon
