yoga for fat people

Anonymous
I'm plus sized (size 20) and I've been working on my weight for the past year (have lost 90 lbs total). I've been seeing yoga classes going on in my gym and it looks like something I'd really enjoy, but I just don't feel comfortable joining a class. In addition to my size, I also have some limited range of movement in my ankle.

So...any recs for instructors in the area who would be comfortable working with me, and me with them? I'm in Vienna, but willing to travel for the right situation.

I don't have any leads for you but wanted to say way to go on the 90 lbs!!!! That's amazing. Good for you.

Some yoga studios have classes for people "with special conditions" meaning injuries or arthritis or degenerative diseases (or anything else). They may also have classes that move more slowly. They also often give private lessons (although this would be more expensive). Some studios let you try out classes before you sign up for a whole series of classes. Good luck and congrats on the weight loss.

Sorry - meant to add to the last post - try Willow Street yoga if you are near Takoma Park or Silver Spring (they have studios in both places). Crossings alternative health in Silver Spring might also have teachers.

I started yoga at a studio downtown (Shakti) at 240 pounds. I think a studio with beginner classes will be better than a gym (I cried at my first gym class). A supportive Beginnger class at a studio should give you support - and if you want to come to Shakti, most classes are pretty small.

A friend of mine attends a gentle yoga class at Sun and Moon Studio in Fairfax and really likes it.

Congrats on your great success!

Congrats on the 90 lb. weightloss!!! That is the kind of weight I'd really like to lose (that's about how overweight I am, and 90 lbs. would put me just about where I want to be..) How'd you do it, and did you do lose all of that in the last year??

Before I moved, I also went to Sun and Moon in Fairfax. Really liked it. All of the instructors I had were very good in showing us how to adapt the poses if we had problems. I'm also overweight and have a messed up knee, but got a lot out of it.

Seriously, you rock. I don't have any advice on specific classes ( although I personally love all of the classes at Tranquil space). I did want to add, though, that yoga at a studio is usually pretty non "competitive". All body types tend to show up, and I honestly don't think people pay two thoughts to the people next to them once the class starts. That said, I agree that starting with a beginner class is a good idea to get yourself comfortable.

I'm a huge believer in yoga, and think it can do a ton for you both physically and mentally. Don't just check out the restorative classes - a good teacher will work with your restrictions while also making sure you get a great workout. Good luck!

I took Yoga For Women at Holy Cross Hospital on Sunday afternoons. Might be a little far for you, but the teacher was good. All body types in the class.

I've been taking yoga at Washington Sports Club for years. I've seen all shapes and sizes and all kinds of injuries. Yoga is really great - it can build strength and make you much more aware of your body, which I think can help with weight loss - and if you are doing other exercise it's a great complement to that since exercise really tightens your muscles.

That's awesome about the weight loss - congratulations!
