I adore Arja at Results Gym on U Street. She makes it all so positive. There is no competition or judgment in her classes. Her stretch classes (Tues evenings and Sats at noon) are the highlight of my week. Her pilates classes are also amazing. I don't look like an athlete, but I really enjoy spending time at the gym. With her (unlike elsewhere) I have never felt like an outsider because I'm not decked out in Lululemon. |
I second Sun and Moon. It is a real yoga studio, not a "gym" studio (some of which are quite scary to be honest). The people taking classes there aren't all about looking cute in their Lululemon togs and getting a cute butt. The instructors care about you working to what is right for YOUR body, and give you lots of alternatives depending on your level of comfort. I highly recommend Enid at the Arlington Branch -- she usually teaches classes on weekend mornings.

If you belong to a gym or there's a studio nearby, consider taking a gentle yoga class at first and then working your way up. (some "hatha" or "iyengar" yoga classes are gentle.) Find a spot near the back where you can still see. Yoga isn't just for skinny, fit people - it's for all sizes and shapes. (You may be seeing a power yoga class, where the participants due tend to trend younger/fitter/skinnier, but not all classes are like that.) one of my earlier power yoga instructors was short and a little chunky, but she could get into poses you wouldn't believe. A good yoga instructor can also give you modifications for your ankle, if you see her/him before class. Good luck, and congrats on your weight loss! |
