Has anyone found a great place for kid's birthday cakes? I'm looking for something between Giant/Costco and Just Cakes in Bethesda.
My sister has someone in North Carolina who makes the most adorable cakes from her home. I'm not sure how to find that person around here (Bethesda, Potomac, Rockville area). Thanks for recommendations... Cara |
| creative cakes in silver spring- delicious and so cute |
| We just had an amazing birthday cake made by a former colleague's wife. Everyone at our son's first birthday commented on how intricate it was (Petit Prince theme) and how delicious it was. I think it was reasonably priced for the size and level of detail. You can see some of her designs at http://www.geocities.com/cakesbykaori/ |
| sorry to hijack your thread, but does anyone know a bakery that does a cake made with individual cupcakes? |
I know safeway does this. |
I'm not sure this is exactly what you mean, but last year we got individual cupcakes from Cakelove, and they put letters on each cupcake to spell out Happy Birthday and then my son's name. |

Are you kidding me? You'd BUY cupcakes? That's the high point of birthdays at my house - baking and decorating the cupcakes! For birthday parties we let guests decorate their own. Come on - You're going to BUY cupcakes?

Apparently there's a place in Georgetown, just up from M ST, where they all they do is sell individual cupcakes. They cost around $3 apiece. I saw the article in the Post not long ago - two sisters run it (and bake them all themselves). Sorry I don't remember the name of the place.
Not something I'd do for a kids' party BUT it did sound like a cool concept. I guess all the Georgetown college kids go crazy over the place. |
I'm assuming you also grow your own wheat for the flour and milk your own cows out back to make the butter. Dude. I am sure there are many things *you* buy that others happily make themselves yet manage to reserve judgement. You should give that a whirl. |
It's called Georgetown Cupcake and the cupcakes are tasty but they run out regularly, close down to make more, have huge lines and end up rationing customers! I'm assuming (hoping) it's much better if you place an order well in advance but I would definitely not recommend swinging by for a cupcake unless you have an hour to kill. And that's best case scenario assuming they didn't close temporarily to resume production. Great concept - needs a lot of logistic work. |
Hey now, each of you has a point here. No need to get snotty!

I think what the cupcake poster is looking for, is one that looks like a regular cake, but pulls out into cupcakes. Here is an example http://users.adelphia.net/~suebaum/cupcakecakes.htm

I'm Snotty No. 2. And sorry - it just bugs me when people go all "OMG - you BUY that??" When like I said, there are things that each person buys that someone else would make themselves. I love making cupcakes and my DS' birthday cakes, etc. But why would I assume that everyone else does too? |
| FWIW - the georgetown cupcakes are to die for!!! I have tried the red velvet, vanilla and chocolate and like them in that order (and i am a chocoholic - but the other two were better IMHO) |
I'm the PP who posted the Cakelove recommendation. I think that is a cool tradition that you do in your house. The last time I tried to make cupcakes that were completely flat and rather stone-like. Therefore I ordered them instead of torturing my son's birthday party guests. I think your tradition is nice, but I don't think it has to be delivered with such incredulity that someone would choose to do otherwise. With that said, now I've seen everything on DCUM - a birthday cake thread getting controversial!! |
